Manufacturer's Description

The Olympus µ TOUGH-8010: A powerhouse of survivability and creativity
When it comes to taking photographs in extreme conditions lesser cameras would baulk at, such as in the rain, the snow or even at parties, the adventurous µ TOUGH-8010 – the toughest µ series model yet – brushes aside any concerns about survivability whilst delivering great looking 14 megapixel photographs and impressively smooth and detailed HD movies into the bargain.

The mighty µ TOUGH-8010 is a glutton for punishment, waterproof to depths of 10 metres*, shockproof against accidental drops from heights of up to 2 metres**, crushproof to 100kg***, freezeproof to -10°C and even scratch proof. Not purely brawn, this camera has brains too: latest on-board technologies include Dual Image Stabilisation to effectively combat camera shake and avoid blurred images, plus Magic Filters to give free reign to photographers’ creative urges.

Upping the ante from the award winning µ TOUGH-8000, the fighting fit µ TOUGH-8010 incorporates a 5x optical zoom (28-140mm****) to enable users to enjoy a wide range of framing opportunities, from group portraits to candid close ups of distant subjects. A huge 2GB internal memory, plus expandability courtesy of an SD card slot ensures you won’t be caught short of space for your action packed photography.

Not merely a collection of stunning features on the inside, from the outside the µ TOUGH-8010 also boldly rises to the challenge, cloaked in Midnight Black or resplendent in Platinum Silver.

Magic Filters

Magic Filters: turn the everyday into the extraordinary
Specifically designed to expand the creative potential of digital photography, this impressive function of the µ TOUGH-8010 utilises in-camera image processing technology to effortlessly transform the everyday into extraordinary scenes. Simple to operate, the filters allow users to create entirely new worlds with their images. From vibrant colours and pencil drawings to mysterious or rounded perspectives, artistic spirits can magically turn ideas into reality.
Pop Art: In the tradition of the late Andy Warhol, this effect enhances colours, making them stronger and more vivid. It creates high-impact pictures that express the happy, light-hearted feeling of the pop art style.

Fish-Eye: With its distorted 180-degree perspective, this filter reproduces the dramatic effect of a fish-eye lens. It lends a new perspective to the whole scene with a “round” effect.

Sketch: This filter gives the impression that subjects have been sketched on the fly by an artist just at the moment that inspiration struck. Images are transformed into line drawings for improvised, creative results.

Pin Hole: For an ethereal feel, Pin Hole reduces the peripheral brightness of images to make them appear as if seen through a pinhole. Added to this is a unique colour tone that results in a style that has an air of secrecy, visually portraying the feeling of being lost in another dimension or space.

TAP Control Menu

Improved TAP Control mode
Simply tap the camera body to access camera functions – including Quick View mode, Shooting Mode and Snow Mode – use of the µ TOUGH-8010 really couldn’t be any easier! Furthermore tilting the camera in playback mode scrolls through saved images – perfect for gloved hands.

HD movie recording and HDMI interface
Implemented on the rough and tumble ready camera is the ability to film High Definition video in 16:9 widescreen ratio and play footage back in the comfort of your living room on an HD TV set via the µ TOUGH-8010’s HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) connection. A 2GB internal memory, expandable via SD card slot also ensures that would-be action movie makers won’t run out of storage capacity in a hurry.

Quick Photo Surfing thanks to innovative software
Flip through images on the spot with Photo Surfing. Thanks to newly built in photo organizing and browsing software, photographers can quickly locate chosen events, people and locations tagged using GPS, Face Detection or the date they were taken. Pictures can then be viewed on a TV, PC or of course via the camera’s built-in LCD screen.

In-camera help and features you can trust to deliver
The µ TOUGH-8010 features an in-camera manual so that even the least experienced family members can rapidly get to grips with the best of what the camera has to offer. Like the rest of the TOUGH camera range the µ TOUGH-8010 includes reliable features in iAuto (Intelligent Auto), Shadow Adjustment Technology, 2.7-inch HyperCrystal III LCD (230k dot resolution) plus subject-following AF tracking. When combined these will ensure every picture you take is a winning shot.

Advanced Face Detection Technology searches for faces in a composition and recognises them as the main subject. It then automatically puts them in focus and optimally adjusts exposure to create an image that’s sharp in the right places and ideally exposed. Advanced Face Detection Technology can detect up to 16 faces.

Also on board the µ TOUGH-8010 is AF tracking, the system that tracks moving subjects to keep them continuously in focus for optimal results. It memorises subject data so that even when the subject goes out of frame the camera resumes tracking when it reappears.

High-precision Dual Image Stabilisation.

High-precision Dual Image Stabilisation.

Providing belt and braces protection against image blur caused by camera shake or fast moving subjects, the µ TOUGH-8010 ‘s Dual Image Stabilisation function is a combination of Optical Image Stabilisation using a built-in gyro sensor and microprocessor which detects camera movement and adjusts the CCD accordingly, plus Digital Image Stabilisation whereby the camera automatically increases ISO sensitivity to allow shorter shutter speeds.

So photographers don’t need to fumble with camera settings in the heat of the action, the µ TOUGH-8010 also boasts the clever i-Auto (intelligent-Auto) mode which uses advanced automatic detection technology to allow the camera to recognise five commonly photographed scenes automatically and adjust its settings accordingly for perfect exposures without the need for manual settings.

USB charging is another new feature that further aids portability. Connect the camera to a computer and let the battery charge while you save and organise your images. The supplied super-compact AC adaptor also makes it easy to charge the battery while you're travelling. The µ TOUGH-8010 additionally features a built-in Manometer for users to get a feel for where they are, particularly when using the camera underwater, whereby its LCD illumination also comes in very handy.

Put all of the above stunning features together and you have the shockproof, waterproof, crush proof, scratch proof and freezeproof µ TOUGH-8010; a reliably rugged companion with which to meet even the hardest and most extreme of photo challenges.

4.0 out of 5 stars TOUGH 8010 Tough all rounder 8 Aug 2010
Colour Name:Midnight Black
A very good, extremely well built little camera. I have bought several Canon cameras and have really enjoyed using them (Powershot (very old), Ixus 950 IS and 350D SLR) so I am biased to Canon cameras. I deviated in order to get something that can withstand some severe weather and being bashed around (not to mention some snorkelling, although have not done that yet and anyway have a case for my Ixus which works very well). The Olympus TOUGH 8010 has proved to be a pretty good competitor to my other compacts. The results are usually good and the fact it can be carried in all weathers doing all activities (I enjoy walking and rock and ice climbing) makes it worth having... I don't have to worry about it when it starts tipping down or when spindrift is blowing around in a maelstrom! I have tested the toughness once by accidentally dropping it from about 1 metre. It bounced off a rock and onto the ground. It was quite a bash and had me worried. Well apart from a small dent to the corner of the body (where it hit the rock) it has not affected it at all. I am not an expert photographer (but I do use an DSLR quite a bit and I am fully aware of the advantages a proper lens (and changeable) brings) so I cannot bore you with detailed analysis of the picture qualities. I can say that the pictures are as good as the ones from my Canon Ixus. The IS works very well at full zoom and in low light conditions and the colour reproduction is excellent. I have not used all the features yet but the intelligent auto mode is excellent, so for point and shoot fans this is a big plus.

My niggles are
It takes a little longer to start up than my Ixus (and I mean a little)
It doesn't remember settings between auto and SCN modes e.g. if I set the flash to off in auto mode it is off in SCN mode.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastically functional 22 Aug 2010
By ANDY
Colour Name:Midnight Black
I have now owned each of the three versions of this camera. The first was a breakthrough in tough but picture quality was a bit shaky when compared to other cameras [without the waterproof /droproof/freeze proof benefits]. The second model took better photos and was easy to use--but failed me when immersed snorkeling. This model has it all. Excellent pictures [by my standards which are very simplistic and not anal]- easy to use, improved waterproofing and a huge picture memory built in. Olympus are constantly listening to the real user reviews and tweaking so well done to them. My 'second' model purchased was returned to Olympus when faulty and dealt with superbly. This third in the seriesis superb and has moved forward immensely.I cannot help but be impressed by something that can be dropped, dunked in sand or mud, dived with, fished with and canoed with, with no real niggles. Serves a purpose. Nothing compares.

4.0 out of 5 stars A big improvement but still quite slow 1 April 2010
Colour Name:Platinum Silver
This digital camera is amazing. It is called tough for a reason. Easy to use, straightforward, amazing to take pictures underwater. Quality of images have improved a lot since last Olympus tough cameras, HD record is also unbelievable! Another negative point, though, is the ib software from Olympus. It doesn't work for Mac OS and I would always have problems with my PC running Windows XP about not recognizing the camera. End of story, I had to uninstall it and use the standard Windows transfer method, which works fine. An awful attempt of Olympus to try and make something as cool as Picasa in the end.

2.0 out of 5 stars Let me down 27 Feb 2011
By Luke
Colour Name:Midnight Black
While the quality of the pictures was reasonable, the camera let me down when it came to it's supposed underwater performance.

In the heat of Iraq it was flawless for 6 months but after one use underwater in Hawaii the black paint began to peel off, resulting in the lens cover (merely held in place by the flimsy black paint!) dropping off and rendering the camera useless underwater!

This appears to be a common problem with this camera, which has been ignored by Olympus and unacknowledged by their support department. Must do better. Avoid.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Camera 15 Jun 2010
Colour Name:Midnight Black
I bought this camera as a replacement for the previous model which I had a lot of trouble with, had repaired twice and eventually returned. The 8010 is altogether much sturdier with a battery/camera card compartment which seals well and locks to prevent water getting in. I have mostly used it for snorkel trips and had no problems so far. The only thing I would mention is there is quite a delay if the camera has gone in to standby mode and you see something you want to snap, so constantly waking it up is a good idea and similarly it takes a few seconds to be ready to take a picture if the flash has gone off, which is a bit of a nuisance when the shark is retreating in to the distance!

4.0 out of 5 stars Zooming lets it down 31 Aug 2010
Colour Name:Platinum Silver
I have been to Sharm in Egypt several times as I love snorkelling and I bought this camera as a replacement to Vivita underwater camera. I used the new camera last week and I reviewed the photos last night and I was very impressed of the quality specially the high speed photos shooting function even underwater. I found that zoom while underwater is a bit fiddly and slow which made capturing fast moving fish much harder I ended up avoiding the use of the zoom underwater.

Video quality is fantastic in the pool and in the sea too one thing you should watch out for is you must steady your hands while videoing in the sea.

Using this camera outside the water is as good as any compact camera, it is very good and fast and is has nice features such as panoramic photo shooting (stitching pictures). I usually use a good quality SLR digital camera but occasionally I opted out for this one due to its size and quality.

As far as toughness, The camera had few knocks in the sea against coral reefs and rocks and came on the top.
