The Olympus TOUGH TG-610: Our toughest ever camera for the toughest of times

Tough times warrant tough measures. For taking pictures and HD video in potentially camera destroying conditions where you wouldn’t normally feel comfortable doing so, there’s the new, ultra rugged Olympus TOUGH TG-610, a virtually indestructible compact model enabling worry free photography anytime and anywhere.

As well as presenting a robust exterior, the camera unveils a host of cutting edge features that deliver excellent image quality too. Users can shoot 14 megapixel still photos, employ the dramatic realism of 3D, and, thanks to Eye-Fi card compatibility, automatically and wirelessly upload stills and movies to their local PC and favourite social networking sites.

Going where others cameras have feared to venture, the TG-610 even features an Underwater Snapshot mode. Whether it’s the local pool or a tropical reef, the Automatic Underwater White Balance feature optimises settings like white balance to deliver Cousteau-like shots of life beneath the waves.

Even deep underwater, a sliding double lock mechanism protects the battery, card slots and ports whilst an additional lens barrier made from metal safeguards the optical zoom lens.

Thanks to such doubly tough protection the TG-610 is fully waterproof to depths of five metres. The camera is additionally freezeproof to -10°C (14°F) and shockproofed against drops from 1.5 metres in height, so there’s no need to worry about younger members of the family using the camera for inventive new play.

Large, bright and clear LCD

The TG-610 comes equipped with a large 3-inch very high-resolution 920,000-dot Super Precision HyperCrystal III LCD screen for framing and reviewing your photos. This means that sharing shots on the spot with family and friends is not only a possibility, even in bright sunlight, but also a real pleasure. A special layer in the LCD cuts down reflection for better visibility, so it’s easier to frame, review and share movies and stills.

The camera’s impressive display is also scratch resistant, thanks to a triple coated acrylic finish.

Packs in a 5x wide optical zoom lens and a plethora of easy to use features

The TG-610 comes complete with a 5x wide optical zoom with a usefully broad focal range equivalent to 28-140mm in 35mm film terms.

It also incorporates the comprehensive features you would expect to find on an Olympus digital camera. Namely Face Detection for perfect people pictures, Pet Detection, Intelligent Auto Mode (i-Auto), AF Tracking, Shadow Adjustment Technology. Add in a TruePIc III+ processor for idea colour reproduction and low noise, Scene Mode, plus Beauty Mode for hiding unwanted blemishes, ISO80 to ISO1600 light sensitivity, built-in flash and in-camera panorama for quick and easy panorama shots and you have a versatile tool at your disposal.

Digital Image Stabilisation

Dual Image Stabilisation

Providing two fold protection, this function is a combination of Optical Image Stabilisation using a built-in gyro sensor and microprocessor detects camera movement and adjusts the CCD accordingly, and Digital Image Stabilisation where the camera automatically increases ISO sensitivity to allow shorter shutter speeds. Both of these help to avoid image blur caused by camera shake or by fast-moving objects.

3D shooting

The Olympus range is now enhanced by optional 3D shooting mode, lending images a striking sense of depth, from close up macro shots to expansive landscapes. This mode captures two shots from two different angles to create shots that can be viewed on a 3D compatible display. There are two 3D settings: Automatic and Manual.

Intelligent Automatic Mode (i-Auto)

Taking a great picture with the TG-610 is as easy as pointing and shooting, thanks to i-Auto mode. This compares common scenes and subjects with on board settings and automatically selects the most appropriate to deliver stunning results that optimize the impact of said subject.

720p High Definition movie capability

In the TG-610’s High Def movie mode the camera captures video using the advanced Motion JPEG movie compression format at a resolution of 1280x720 pixels and a rate of 30 frames per second.

Eight Magic Filters for turning the everyday into the extraordinary

Specifically designed to expand the creative potential of digital photography, this impressive function of the TG-610 utilises in-camera image processing technology to effortlessly transform the everyday into extraordinary scenes. Simple to operate, the filters allow users to create entirely new worlds with their images. From vibrant colours and pencil drawings to mysterious or rounded perspectives, artistic spirits can magically turn ideas into reality. What’s more, most of the filters can be used when recording video as well as shooting stills.

Users can choose from Punk, Pop Art, Pin Hole, Drawing, Fish Eye, Soft Focus and new additions Sparkle and Watercolour.

Punk: Pose like Sid and Nancy and have your world turned dayglo pink, with this fun feature that transforms your photos into crudely photocopied fanzine style images, but in a good way.
Pop Art: In the tradition of Andy Warhol, this effect enhances colours, making them stronger and more vivid. It creates high-impact pictures that express the happy, light-hearted feeling of the pop art style.
Fish-Eye (photos only): With its distorted 180-degree perspective, this filter reproduces the dramatic effect of a fish-eye lens. It lends a new perspective to the whole scene with a “round” effect.
Drawing: This filter gives the impression that subjects have been sketched on the fly by an artist just at the moment that inspiration struck. Images are transformed into line drawings for improvised, creative results.
Pin Hole: For an ethereal feel, Pin Hole reduces the peripheral brightness of images like an image seen through a pinhole. Added to this is a unique colour tone that results in a style that has an air of secrecy or portrays the feeling of being lost in another dimension or space.
Soft Focus: Give your portraits that romantic otherworldly look beloved of wedding photographers.
Sparkle (photos only): A Magic Filter that truly imparts a sprinkling of fairy dust, adding twinkling reflections to shiny objects.
Watercolour: With this option pictures are transformed into a watercolour painting framed by soft light.
