Manufacturer's Description

The Olympus TOUGH TG-310: Our toughest ever camera for the toughest of times

Tough times warrant tough measures. For taking pictures and HD video in potentially camera destroying conditions where you wouldn’t normally feel comfortable doing so, there’s the new, ultra rugged Olympus TOUGH TG-310, a virtually indestructible compact model enabling worry free photography anytime and anywhere.

As well as presenting a robust exterior, the camera unveils a host of cutting edge features that deliver excellent image quality too. Users can shoot 14 megapixel still photos, employ the dramatic realism of 3D, and, thanks to Eye-Fi card compatibility, automatically and wirelessly upload stills and movies to their local PC and favourite social networking sites.

As good in the wet as the dry

Even deep underwater, a sliding double lock mechanism protects the battery, card slots and ports whilst an additional lens barrier made from hard glass safeguards the optical zoom lens.

Thanks to such doubly tough protection the TG-310 is fully waterproof to depths of three metres. The camera is additionally freezeproof to -10°C (14°F) and shockproofed against drops from 1.5 metres in height, so there’s no need to worry about younger members of the family using the camera for inventive new play.

Large, bright and clear LCD

The TG-310 comes equipped with a 2.7-inch very high-resolution 230,000-dot colour LCD screen for framing and reviewing your photos. This means that sharing shots on the spot with family and friends is not only a possibility, even in bright sunlight, but also a real pleasure.

Packs in a 3.6x wide optical zoom lens and a plethora of easy to use features

The TG-310 comes complete with a 3.6x wide optical zoom with a usefully broad focal range equivalent to 28-102mm in 35mm film terms.

It also incorporates the comprehensive features you would expect to find on an Olympus digital camera. Namely Face Detection for perfect people pictures, Pet Detection, Intelligent Auto Mode (i-Auto), AF Tracking, Shadow Adjustment Technology. Add in a TruePIc III+ processor for idea colour reproduction and low noise, Scene Mode, plus Beauty Mode for hiding unwanted blemishes, ISO80 to ISO1600 light sensitivity, built-in flash and in-camera panorama for quick and easy panorama shots and you have a versatile tool at your disposal.

B004GUTNOY - Olympus TG-310 with Digital Image Stabilisation
Digital Image Stabilisation

Dual Image Stabilisation

Providing two fold protection, this function is a combination of Optical Image Stabilisation using a built-in gyro sensor and microprocessor detects camera movement and adjusts the CCD accordingly, and Digital Image Stabilisation where the camera automatically increases ISO sensitivity to allow shorter shutter speeds. Both of these help to avoid image blur caused by camera shake or by fast-moving objects.

3D shooting

The Olympus range is now enhanced by optional 3D shooting mode, lending images a striking sense of depth, from close up macro shots to expansive landscapes. This mode captures two shots from two different angles to create shots that can be viewed on a 3D compatible display. There are two 3D settings: Automatic and Manual.

Intelligent Automatic Mode (i-Auto)

Taking a great picture with the TG-310 is as easy as pointing and shooting, thanks to i-Auto mode. This compares common scenes and subjects with on board settings and automatically selects the most appropriate to deliver stunning results that optimize the impact of said subject.

720p High Definition movie capability

In the TG-310’s High Def movie mode the camera captures video using the advanced Motion JPEG movie compression format at a resolution of 1280x720 pixels and a rate of 30 frames per second.

Eight Magic Filters for turning the everyday into the extraordinary

Specifically designed to expand the creative potential of digital photography, this impressive function of the TG-310 utilises in-camera image processing technology to effortlessly transform the everyday into extraordinary scenes. Simple to operate, the filters allow users to create entirely new worlds with their images. From vibrant colours and pencil drawings to mysterious or rounded perspectives, artistic spirits can magically turn ideas into reality. What’s more, most of the filters can be used when recording video as well as shooting stills.

Users can choose from Punk, Pop Art, Pin Hole, Drawing, Fish Eye, Soft Focus and new additions Sparkle and Watercolour.

Punk: Pose like Sid and Nancy and have your world turned dayglo pink, with this fun feature that transforms your photos into crudely photocopied fanzine style images, but in a good way.
Pop Art: In the tradition of Andy Warhol, this effect enhances colours, making them stronger and more vivid. It creates high-impact pictures that express the happy, light-hearted feeling of the pop art style.
Fish-Eye (photos only): With its distorted 180-degree perspective, this filter reproduces the dramatic effect of a fish-eye lens. It lends a new perspective to the whole scene with a “round” effect.
Drawing: This filter gives the impression that subjects have been sketched on the fly by an artist just at the moment that inspiration struck. Images are transformed into line drawings for improvised, creative results.
Pin Hole: For an ethereal feel, Pin Hole reduces the peripheral brightness of images like an image seen through a pinhole. Added to this is a unique colour tone that results in a style that has an air of secrecy or portrays the feeling of being lost in another dimension or space.
Soft Focus: Give your portraits that romantic otherworldly look beloved of wedding photographers.
Sparkle (photos only): A Magic Filter that truly imparts a sprinkling of fairy dust, adding twinkling reflections to shiny objects.
Watercolour: With this option pictures are transformed into a watercolour painting framed by soft light.

Quick photo surfing thanks to innovative software

Thanks to [ib] software images can be browsed, organized, and viewed by person, place, location or event.

High capacity SDXC card compatible

The TG-310 further takes the worry out of photography and offers almost unlimited memory expansion possibilities by providing compatibility with the new SDXC removable media card format (as well as SD and SDHC).

This affords high storage capacities of up to a gargantuan 2TB to ensure you don’t run out of space for those many thousands of photos and videos at an inopportune moment – thereby making the camera as ‘future proof’ as possible.

USB Battery Charging

Connect the camera to a computer and let the battery charge while you save and organise your images.

The Olympus TOUGH TG-310 is available in silver, blue, red, white and orange.

5.0 out of 5 stars Underwater Adventure! 19 Sep 2011
    By PaulS
    Colour Name:Red
I bought the little Olympus as I wanted an easy to use point and shoot that I did'nt have to worry about getting wet, or sandy. The additional ability to take pictures when snorkling sold me.

As previously mentioned, the buttons are a little on the small side and the autofocus can be a little slow, but no real issues.

The waterproofing works!! I dropped the camera whilst sailing in to approx. 10 metres of sea water - it also took two hard bounces before disappearing over the side. 18 hours later, I managed to get someone to dive down and retrieve it. Amazingly enough, it still works perfectly!!

3.0 out of 5 stars It's good but could be better... 26 Mar 2011
    Colour Name:White
I've had this camera now for a few days and have taken a dozen or so pictures so this is just an initial views and thoughts.

I have dunked it into some water so it seems good so far in terms of its waterproof-ness, I'll be giving it a proper test in a couple of weeks. I wanted somehting that could take some punishment and not take up too much room which it does. It also has a tripod mount and takes 720p movies with sound which were another 2 features I wanted.

It has a good number of features, the magic filters look decent and I'll probably use them. The 3D picture is to me a gimmick, I don't have a 3D TV and nor is the screen on this camera 3D so useless - a feature I didn't want to pay for but no alternatives sadly.

Notable disappointments so far are its indoor picture quality; the flash over-exposures and objects look white-washed. Also the zoom was disappointing, the model up (TG 610) has larger range of zoom as I believe- plus that model can be taken down to 5m water depth, but I was limited on money. However I bought this camera for it's rugged features and the fact it can be taken into water and dropped, I was aware I would have to sacifice some features such as the zoom, but disappointed nonetheless.

The buttons are a tad small but nothing to worry about. The navigation is quite intuitive once you get use to it, after all the less external buttons there are, the more waterproof it'll be. So it uses a scrolling action with the left and right buttons to get to the main features it has. The panoramic setting I like as it takes the photos automatically once you overlap it with the previous photo.

Overall it feels solid, takes good outdoor pictures and looks good too.

    5.0 out of 5 stars waterproof!!! 12 Sep 2011
    By ecats
    Colour Name:Red
Very good camera and it is waterproof 100%. Just be careful to lock the cover properly (move the little switch to the indication lock) so that it wont open by accident. Once happened to me and some drops of water got in and as soon as i realized it (a couple of hours later) the camera didn't power on. I removed the battery and dried the camera with a hairdryer and then all came back to normal. I'm using it for 3 months now, in and out of the water and takes very good shots, has a lot of settings and can take shots in motion, with low light, pets etc.
    Very good deal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Olympus Underwater Camera 14 Oct 2011
    By SteveW
    Colour Name:Red
I had the earlier version of this (the one in the TV advert that the toddler kicked around the garden)and that was pretty good - great for snorkelling (video too!) and OK as a normal camera. Eventually it got too battered, so we got this one. Similar in layout for controls but because they're all rubber buttons now, I think they're alot more fiddly to use, and seem to be less responsive. This means you end up using your finger nails on the buttons so they may not last.
Also, on powersave the time to come on again is just too long, so you wonder if you've pressed it, and then just as you press it again it comes on and then goes off...
So nothing major wrong with it, and used it underwater in Corfu recently OK, but it takes a bit of getting used to.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not so tough -- lens failed :-( 8 May 2013
    By Mrs Mac
    Colour Name:Red
We bought this camera, from another retailer Christmas 2011, for our boys on the premise it would survive any potential beating they may give it. And being TOUGH, would more than cope. However, they have looked after it remarkably well: didn't drop it, or let it feel even a drop of water. We've been impressed how well they have looked after it.

Sadly, it was the camera itself that let them down. Just beyond a year of light use the camera has ceased to function. Press the power button and the camera runs through an initial diagnostic routine (I assume, as it's an attempted whirring sound on the lens) and subsequently beeps for 5 secs then switches off. Needless to say, our boys are somewhat disappointed they can't use it for their creative adventures.

Perhaps the lens mechanism has suffered some kind of damage, but the construction of this camera makes it impossible for the kids, or any user, to physically touch the it. So handling is not likely the cause for the failure. Particularly, since the camera was supposed to be 'Tough'!

Usage wise, our kids took approximately 1,000 photographs over the year - works out around 10p per photograph.
