The Olympus TOUGH TG-1: a Toughened Camera that True Photographers Can Love

Rugged cameras sometimes put self-protection first and image quality second; but not Olympus' flagship TOUGH model, the TG-1. This camera boasts remarkable features as well as the capability to deliver remarkable pictures, with a bright/fast f2.0 aperture lens and a body capable of surviving a dunking to depths of 12 metres.

The TG-1 is ideal for capturing pictures in the permanent twilight closer to the ocean floor. An optional adapter waterproof fisheye and tele converter lenses are also available to really extend creativity.

Engineered to excel whatever the shooting conditions, the all-metal TG-1 TOUGH is reassuringly waterproof, freezeproof, shockproof and crushproof. So, whether you find yourself on the slopes of an alpine mountain or exploring the depths of a tropical lagoon, the TG-1 is a must for worry-free photography and achieving one of a kind pictures.

Not Just Brawn but Brains, Too

The TG-1 is packed with innovative features such as the Olympus iHS technology, focused on intelligence, high sensitivity and high speed. The colour rich, high contrast and anti reflective OLED display also aids visibility, while the GPS and an Electronic Compass help you navigate and recall where each image was shot.

The three new shooting modes (Low Light, Super Sports, and Super Macro) make it tough to get anything other than an excellent-quality image, making the TG-1 your perfect ready-for-anything travel companion.

Pushing the Boundaries of Toughened Cameras' Picture Quality

The high-quality lens incorporated into the TOUGH TG-1 is combined with a powerful TruePic VI image processor and a 12-megapixel low noise, as well as a high sensitivity CMOS sensor.

The TG-1 also features technology found in the Olympus PEN camera range, such as the FAST AF system. This ensures that even in a fast-changing shooting scenario you will get the image or even Full HD video clip you were aiming for.

A Camera with the Power for Conversion

The Olympus TG-1 allows the attachment of optional conversion lenses, via an adapter.

Achieve even wider, perspective-distorting dynamic images courtesy of a waterproof fisheye converter, or get dramatic close-ups and portraits with a professional-looking shallow depth of field/background blur via a tele converter, with the power to increase the camera's own zoom power by 6.8x. The camera's Super Resolution Zoom feature this increased this further to 13.6x.

The Proof is in the Proofing

Excellent image quality with added peace of mind, that's the pitch for the TG-1. The camera is crush-proof and able to withstand a force of 100kg. It's also waterproof to 12 metres, shock-proofed against drops from two metres in height, and freezeproof to minus 10°C.

The above is achieved, in part, thanks to a sliding double lock mechanism and metal body ensuring optimum protection for battery, card slots and ports. The hard glass lens barrier also allows extra tough lens protection, thanks to its water-repellent and scratch-resistant double seal technology.

But no matter how reassuringly rugged the camera is, picture quality doesn't come a poor second. Low Light Mode automatically increases the shutter speed to avoid blur resulting from camera shake when conditions are dimmer, while Super Macro Mode lets the user zoom in for stunning close ups just 1cm from the lens.

TAP Control for Ease of Use – Even When Wearing Gloves

Not just a great looking gadget, the TG-1 has been built with practicality in mind. An improved TAP Control Mode allows this TOUGH camera to be controlled via a tap or tilt of the body, which is ideal for anyone with wet fingers or wearing gloves.

An integral GPS antenna and e-compass with unique three-sensor technology provides orientation and key information at a glance, with an on-board manometer for checking depth underwater. A LED illuminator provides a means of illuminating underwater scenes or spotlighting close-up subjects.

4x wide optical zoom

Flexibility and Precision

The 4x ultra wide optical zoom, equivalent to 25-100mm in 35mm film terms, provides the scope for both precision and flexibility, while the 3-inch, high 610,000 dot resolution OLED screen allows for accurate shot composition and crystal clear playback, with OLED technology providing enhanced contrast, brightness and angle of view.

The TG-1 additionally incorporates all the comprehensive features you would expect to find in an Olympus digital camera.

These include a powerful TruePic VI image processing engine, Multi-Motion Movie IS (image stabilisation) for reduced blur when recoding video whilst walking, plus HDR Backlight Adjustment for ideal exposure when shooting against the light.

Added to this is Face Detection technology, for perfect portraits, Pet Detection, Beauty Make-up mode for unwanted blemishes, Intelligent Auto Mode (i-Auto), AF Tracking, Shadow Adjustment Technology, ISO100 to ISO6400 light sensitivity, and in-camera panorama for quick and easy panorama shot. As if that wasn't enough, scene mode settings are included to provide an optimum performance in specific conditions, and include Landscape, Night and Underwater Snapshot.

Dual Image Stabilisation
Dual Image Stabilisation

Dual Image Stabilisation

The Optical Image Stabilisation uses a built-in gyro sensor and microprocessor to detect camera movement and to adjust the CCD accordingly, while the Digital Image Stabilisation automatically increases ISO sensitivity to allow shorter shutter speeds. Both of these help avoiding image blur caused by camera shake or by fast-moving objects. There's also a built-in flash to fall back on.

3D Shooting

The Olympus TOUGH TG-1 is enhanced by optional 3D shooting mode, lending images a striking sense of depth, from close-up macro shots to expansive landscapes. This mode captures two shots from two different angles to create shots that can be viewed on a 3D compatible display.

Intelligent Automatic Mode (i-Auto)

Taking a great picture with the TG-1 is as easy as pointing and shooting, thanks to the i-Auto mode. This mode compares common scenes and subjects with the on-board settings and automatically selects the most appropriate, delivering stunning results.

1080p Full HD Movie Capability

The TG-1's Full HD movie mode uses the advanced Motion JPEG movie compression format at a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels for excellent quality video with sound.

12 Magic Filters for Turning the Everyday into the Extraordinary

Specifically designed to expand the creative potential of digital photography, this impressive function of the TG-1 utilises in-camera image processing technology to effortlessly transform the everyday into extraordinary scenes. Simple to operate, the filters allow users to create entirely new worlds with their images. What's more, most of the filters can be used when recording video (except Fragmented and Sparkle) too.

Users can choose from a variety of filters:

  • Punk: Pose like Sid and Nancy and have your world turned dayglo pink, with this fun feature that transforms your photos into crudely photocopied fanzine style images, but in a good way.
  • Pop Art: In the tradition of Andy Warhol, this effect enhances colours, making them stronger and more vivid. It creates high-impact pictures that express the happy, light-hearted feeling of the pop art style.
  • Fish-Eye: With its distorted 180-degree perspective, this filter reproduces the dramatic effect of a fish-eye lens. It lends a new perspective to the whole scene with a "round" effect.
  • Drawing: This filter gives the impression that subjects have been sketched on the fly by an artist just at the moment that inspiration struck. Images are transformed into line drawings for improvised, creative results.
  • Pin Hole: For an ethereal feel, Pin Hole reduces the peripheral brightness of images like an image seen through a pinhole. Added to this is a unique colour tone that results in a style that has an air of secrecy or portrays the feeling of being lost in another dimension or space.
  • Soft Focus: Give your portraits that romantic otherworldly look beloved of wedding photographers.
  • Sparkle (photos only): A Magic Filter that truly imparts a sprinkling of fairy dust, adding twinkling reflections to shiny objects.
  • Watercolour: With this option pictures are transformed into a watercolour painting framed by soft light.
  • Reflection: A simulation of a magical horizontal reflection of your subject, as if they were standing next to perfectly still water.
  • Miniature: Capture your subject and present them as if on a toy town scale.
  • Fragmented (photos only): Lends photographs a tiled, collage-like effect, as if an image has been cut up and reassembled.
  • Dramatic: Enhances detail in shadows and skies to provide greater impact and drama to the everyday.
Quick Photo Surfing Thanks to Innovative Software

Thanks to [ib] software, images can be browsed, organised, and viewed by person, place, location or event. There's also an in-camera help guide if you do get stuck.

Eye-Fi Card Compatible

Looking for the ability to wirelessly transfer your images? Then look no further than the TG-1, which offers compatibility with the Eye-Fi range of media cards.

USB Battery Charging

Connect the camera to a computer and let the battery charge while you save and organise your images.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tough, easy to use, well thought out 20 Aug 2012
By Martin Turner HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The first thing we did with this camera after we got it out of the box -- before we even charged it up -- was to drop it on the stone floor. Just to see. This tough Tough camera is guaranteed to withstand 2m drops, goes underwater deeper than I've ever been and knows where in the world you are without you having to tell it. The equivalent of 20-100 mm (on 35mm) optical zoom takes in the most widely used focal lengths, and the bright f2.0 lens (at 20 mm) means more light is entering the camera at its widest aperture than on big Nikon zooms, like the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens. As well as the customary tacky effects settings, the Tough has some quite refined picture modes, including portrait, beauty, landscape, underwater, and even settings for identifying your dog or cats face (separate settings for each kind). You can save your favourite custom settings, though there is no manual focus or manual aperture/shutter. The only real downside as a camera is that the images are only available in JPEG.

* Video *
For HD video the picture quality is absolutely fine, and the Image Stabilisation works decently. However, there is no microphone input, and you are stuck with the camera top stereo microphone which goes 'eek' whenever you zoom in or out. This is fairly common with compact cameras. The bottom line on that is that, although compacts can capture HD format video, they can't capture HD quality video. However, given that a Sony HD camcorder costs upwards of £3,000 for the most basic pro model, you'd be surprised if they could.

* We loved... *
We loved the responsive controls and fast shutter speed. It doesn't match a high end dSLR such as a Nikon D800 Digital SLR Camera, but it does feel an awful lot more responsive than most of the compact cameras we've tried, including the Samsung WB850F. The ruggedness and waterproofness of this camera is going to be its major selling point. It survived the drop on the stone floor without even looking scratched and, short of testing it to destruction, we'd bet that all of Olympus's promises on that score come true.

* Picture quality *
I was really impressed by the picture quality on this camera. When the JPEG was turned to Fine, the colours were true, the image was not blotchy (compact camera JPEG usually is) and there was an overall sharpness and smoothness which I enjoyed. When noise reduction kicks in things get a bit blurrier, but there's no real way round that. ISO goes from 100 to an impressive 6400, though naturally that brings a lot more noise or noise-reduction blur in. You will probably want to leave the ISO on auto.

* Controls *
This isn't a dSLR, and -- aside from the zoom -- you are going to be choosing between settings, not really taking control of them. You can save two sets of presets, so if you know what settings you'll want you could set these up before hand. Apart from that, setting anything requires digging into menus, by which time most shots will have gone. The camera is designed to be operated by tapping when wearing heavy gloves, though you have to turn this feature on. It gives easy access to menus, though you still use the button to actually take the picture (this confused me for a bit).

* How it compares *
If you're looking at the Tough you're probably wondering about the relatively lowly 12 MP and the small 4x zoom range, given that the aforementioned Samsung, for example, offers 20x zoom and 16 MP. 12 MP is actually enough to shoot a billboard or an A3 magazine spread. More importantly, the JPEG compression seems a lot lighter on this camera than it did on the Samsung, when both are set to 'Fine' mode, meaning that you get more detail out of this despite the lower mega pixels. I would be happy using this camera for commercial work, and I wasn't with the Samsung. Because there's no RAW, I doubt I'll be shooting adverts with this, but it feels responsive enough for magazine spreads and press articles. The zoom is good. If you want to go longer, you can buy and fit Olympus's tele-zoom, which takes you right out to Paparazzi levels, and you can also get a fisheye, which might be just the thing for underwater photography. Speaking of underwater, you can get an additional housing that lets you deep dive with this camera.

The GPS feature is a lot better than Samsung's. You don't have to download maps, because it already has built in tens of thousands of landmarks and cities across the world. It picked the nearest landmark to my house instantly, and so informed me whereabouts the picture was taken rather than just giving a cryptic GPS reference. The supplied software is for Mac and PC, and installs and updates relatively painlessly. As far as supplied software goes, the Olympus viewer is actually really good, and allows you to do most of the things most people do in Lightroom.

I cut my teeth on Olympus OM1 cameras, which were virtually indestructible and very compact for an SLR. This clearly isn't the same kind of thing -- the OM1 was fully manual, and you can't use this manually at all -- but it's nice to see that Olympus have recognised that their reputation for toughness is worth trading on.

I would recommend this camera to anyone adventurous who wants a camera they don't have to think about too much, either in operation or in care and attention. The quality is good enough -- with judicious use -- for travel writing, and Olympus has thought hard about what travellers want, including a compression guarantee so that you know it won't be crushed in your suitcase, a manometer, switchable home and world time, and special shooting modes for underwater, the beach, sports, and so on. The macro is extremely good, especially when LED flash assisted, which is something else that you almost certainly will want if you are going to document your adventures.

Good job, Olympus.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Rugged Outdoor Camera 30 Sep 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm not even an enthusiastic amateur, so this report will not be about anything technical, just my findings in 2 weeks of ownership of an Olympus TG1. This report is about how "I" found it coped with "my" needs.
Why did I buy it? Well, after having one very good compact die because of me dropping it in water and its replacement develop dark blurs on the photos because of the lens sucking in dirt (I did manage to open it and clean it myself), I needed something more resilient. I needed something waterproof, freeze-proof, shockproof and dustproof, so after reading a lot of good reports, I decided to buy the TG1 as an extra camera to my Panasonic TZ8.
How did I test it? I took it as my only camera on a 2 week walking and exploring break in Yorkshire, trying out all the features that I thought I would use and playing with a few of the others.
Findings.
1. I particularly found the heavier weight useful when trying to hold the camera steady in windy conditions and when using the video.
2. The f2.0 lens is great for shooting indoors and in poor light and I particularly liked the macro, which produced spectacular close-ups down to as little as 1cm.
3. The controls are very easy to understand and work, but I found the on/off switch a bit too sensitive and accidentally switched the camera on once or twice while putting it into its case.
4. The video is good quality and easy to use, but the camera tends to search a bit for the correct focus. All photographs were excellent, no matter the conditions.
5. The "sports" mode is useful for shooting anything that's moving quickly.
6. I like the panorama mode very much, with the camera taking care of aligning 3 shots and creating the panoramic photo.
7. Having 4x optical + 4x digital zoom isn't a problem. Combined, you have 16x magnification without any loss of quality - perfect for my needs.
8. All the special effects worked very well and although all the pre-set shooting modes that I tried worked perfectly, the Auto mode took all the thinking out of the process and it too was ideal for me.
9. The camera worked well in all conditions and I mostly kept it in my shirt pocket. Dust was easily removed with a soft cloth or a rinse under a tap.
10. The GPS worked very well in locating photo positions. When I put the grid ref into Google maps, it found the position I was standing to usually within 10m. I tested the GPS tracking on a couple of 6 hour walks and although 99% of my route was shown correctly, there was one occasion when it was nearly 1 mile out and on another occasion it showed that I had been to 2 places in Greece. So, it's not totally reliable there.
11. The battery lasted better than I thought. On a full charge of a non-Olympus battery, I took 250 12mp photos, 5 mins of HD video and did 8 hours of continuous GPS tracking. The camera indicates a possible 1hr 38mins of HD video to a 16gb SDHC card......much more than the 8 mins on the same card in my Lumix TZ8.
Conclusion. This is a great little camera for anyone who ventures out and about a bit. It's probably lacking in some areas for some people, but it's spot-on for me, although I'll still keep my TZ8 as well, for its greater versatility, although I'll have to treat it more carefully.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Lot of Features Packed Into a Compact 18 Aug 2012
By Matt VINE™ VOICE
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is the first compact camera I have owned in about twenty years and the first Olympus in about seven. I was put off the brand by my last camera, a 8080WZ which was almost, but not quite, an SLR (which, if I'd had any sense at the time, I would have bought instead). The main thing that irked me about the Olympus was the ridiculous amount of accessories they produced, each model of camera having its own telephoto lens, wide angle lens and then a separate converter to attach them all. Sadly, this has not changed. For the TG-1 you can get the Olympus Tele Converter for Tough TG-1 and the Olympus Fish Eye Converter for Tough TG-1 (each costing quite a bit on their own) and on top of that you need the Olympus Conversion Lens Adapter for FCON-T01, TCON-T01, TG-1 to fit them onto the camera. Why not just build it into the lens? Because they want more money, of course.

The main feature that attracted me to this camera (apart from the amount of hammer it can supposedly take) is that it is waterproof to 12m. I am a scuba diver and while this is not an ideal depth (PADI qualified divers being able to go as deep as 18m) I thought it might be nice to play around with the next time I go out. You can get a waterproof housing (Olympus PT-053) that enables you to go down to 45m (the maximum recreational diving depth being 40m) but that costs almost as much as the camera itself. On the whole, the waterproof feature is more likely to appeal to snorkelers.

The camera is more likely geared towards people into outdoor pursuits: climbing, cycling and anywhere else it may get banged about a bit. Of course, the shockproof aspect of the camera is only effective to heights of 2m so dropping it from a moving bike or off a cliff probably isn't going to end well.

The camera itself is an average sized compact with a large LED screen. The controls do feel a little clustered to the right of the screen and the function wheel is a bit stiff to turn but for such a small camera it does have a lot of functions and options crammed in. There are eight different modes on the function wheel ranging from iAuto (camera does everything for you), P (Program Auto, you can manually change settings), sports mode, low light and two custom modes.

There is also Magic under which you can apply one of twelve different filters, something I don't imagine I will have any use for as these are things that can usually be done to a better standard to photos in computer software. Included here are pop-art, fish eye, drawing, punk and sparkle, among others. Some of them, such as drawing, create two versions of the photo; the original and the effect version.

Finally on the function wheel is Scene Mode, under which are a number of different shooting modes to make the photographer's life easier. Standards include Portrait, Landscape, Night, Sunset and Macro but there are some others too such as Fireworks (long shutter speed in low light), four different modes for underwater photography, two pet modes: cat and dog, which automatically take photos when a pet's face is detected, and panorama. The last function I have failed to get to work properly, the joining of photos being extremely poor. I have tried this both indoors and outdoors with subjects both close and far away and there's always a noticeable join, either where a line doesn't meet up (such as a railing) or the exposures differ and the colours don't match.

The camera boasts a 4x optical zoom with a further 4x digital zoom which, when combined with the Optical Image Stabilisation, can produce fairly impressive pictures. Not perfect quality by any stretch of the imagination but excellent for a compact. There is also a toughened glass cover to protect the lens which is water and scratch resistant (I tried running it under the tap and literally no water will remain on the glass when you hold it up. I am not going to try to scratch it with a rock just for this review though, sorry!) The camera has no lens cap but I don't know whether it needs one. I'd certainly feel better if there was as I would imagine at some point it would be possible to damage the glass. Hitting it into a sharp rock, dropping it etc.

The camera also has built in GPS which serves a number of functions. First of all, once set up, GPS data is tagged to each photo so you can recall exactly where it was taken. Also, you can bring up an electronic compass on the camera's screen (hold down the menu button while GPS is turned on) to view and navigate to nearby landmarks. The only downsides with the function is that the A-GPS data needs to be updated via computer software (which is free but not included with the camera) every fourteen days and with all GPS devices, the battery life will suffer heavily.

Pros
Lots of preset shooting modes
Toughened glass lens cover repels water (and supposedly scratches, but I'm not testing that!)
Double locks for bother battery and connection compartments to decrease chance of them opening unexpectedly

Cons
The stereo microphone is in a really stupid place (top edge on the left, just under my finger)
No lens cap
Typical Olympus expensive accessories
On-board memory is fairly pointless, only 8MB. Enough for one photo or two seconds of film on highest quality

For me the camera loses one star because it half promises to do a job but if you want a wide angle or zoom lens, extra protection, deeper underwater capabilities or a better flash you'll have to pay a small fortune for all the extras. I know this is the case with SLR cameras but that's what you expect with them. For a compact this seems like just a bit too much hassle to me. If you're happy with its performance out of the box and it does exactly what you want it to do, consider it five out of five but for me it just missed on a few things.
