Olympus Tough TG3 compared to Panasonic Lumix FT5
Nine months ago I needed to replace my old waterproof camera, a Pentax Optio that was and still is capable of taking good pictures and had survived plenty of canoeing action. The problem was its slowness, many action shots being lost because of the delay in focusing.
After many hours of reading reviews and specifications I narrowed the choice down to the Panasonic Lumix and the Olympus Tough TG2, finally deciding on the Lumix as several reports of water ingress in the TG2 made me concerned. The TG3 has now been released and as we now have one in the family I am in the fortunate position of being able to compare it directly to the Lumix.
So how do they compare?
Build. Both beautifully built and finished, approximately the same size, but the Olympus is about 50g heavier, quite noticeable with the Panasonic Lumix being just under 200g. The Olympus has two opening ports, both feeling very positive when shutting, the Panasonic just has one.
Battery. The Panasonic has an external charger so a spare battery can be popped in and the camera is in use immediately. The Olympus battery is charged whilst in the camera, so although another battery could be put in , the discharged one cannot be charged. The charger/transformer unit is roughly the same size with both. Battery life is similar.
Screen. Identical sizes and both seem equally visible in bright light. The flashing light indicating movie recording is bigger and brighter on the Lumix which I find useful.
Menu. The Olympus is perhaps a little easier to use.
Controls. Both cameras have easy to use controls which soon become intuitive. Nothing really to choose between here.
Lens. The Olympus is wider and faster, the Panasonic has a more powerful telephoto function.

This is my 3rd Olympus Tough camera I have had and use them from general family snaps to outdoors and kayaking/watersports, so they need to be versatile, rugged and waterproof. The previous 2 were good but this is the best one.

As with many digital cameras, it is packed with a host of various options for picture quality (16Mb being the highest quality), video, scene selections, complete or partial automatic settings, but there are some key points that separate this camera from the rest.

Firstly and foremost is the speed of picture taking - it has a chunkier battery than the other Tough cameras and it means there is almost no delay when clicking the button and the shot being taken. This also allows for high speed shots to be taken, so rather than a single shot mode you can change it to sequential mode (may be 5 shots a second) High Speed mode (15 shots a second) or High Speed mode 2 (60 shots a second) - pretty impressive. You need good light for this though!

There are many different effects to choose from. I liked the Dramatic Tone; it seems to lend itself to some of the coastal scenes I took on holiday recently. I also really like the Photo Story option, which allows you to take 2 or more pictures which can be combined into one photo of different styles. The Microscope mode it great too; especially good for close ups of flowers. I just tested it taking a picture of the letter "C" on the keyboard; the lens was less than 1 centimetre away and it focused!

The GPS is excellent, identifying where the photos were taken (on an OS Survey type map), using the supplied Olympus Viewer 3 software.

Not a bad camera but far from perfect.
For example...
Only 4 x Optical zoom - 5 or 6x would have been better.
Battery has to be charged in camera and no charger provided (USB Charge) and takes a couple of hours plus.
Be very careful you don't misplace the USB cable, the socket on the camera is non standard and thus only the provided cable fits.
Zoom motor noise is VERY audible when you are recording a video and it also effect picture stability / focus while zooming see http://youtu.be/6E0pXXZmpjg for an example I shot.
Defaults to low quality JPEG compression, make sure you change to fine mode for better quality images.
Two hatch doors to worry about water ingress should you want to use it underwater (one for memory card / battery and the other for charging).

I also bought the silicon protective case, underwater case (good to 45m) and protective carry case (all on sale at Amazon).

In operation the camera is pretty responsive with a fast start-up time and fast GPS fix time (GPS Assist data can be updated via WiFi and the Olympus Image Track App. Note, a different app is required to import your photos at up to original quality mode "Olympus Image Share"

As I already mentioned, the camera defaults to a lower image compression mode but this for the various shooting modes can be updated to fine.

I have used the camera in the English Channel with a water temperature of 14c which caused the lens to mist up but of course no such problems when its in the optional PT-056 case.

Note, in the underwater mode 1, it likes to fire the flash and the English channel is very murky so all you get unless the subject is very close is the reflection of the debris in the water.
