Looking for a higher class of travel compact that delivers a performance to out strip rivals? The search is over. Seeking to please ambitious photographers the Olympus SH-50 packs in a host of new world-beating technology, including manual settings and multiple axis image stabilization (IS) - a world first for compact digital cameras, that delivers maximum detail and minimum blur.
In fact the effectiveness of the Hybrid 5-axis Movie IS allows for judder free video even when running. In addition to the usual yaw and pitch, it compensates for movement around the axis of the lens as well as horizontal and vertical shift.
But that's not all. The Olympus SH-50 further benefits from advanced sensor and processing technologies that decisively raise the bar for low light photography. Couple this with a Telephoto Macro option and the ability to create slow motion video by shooting at a high 120fps frame rate and, before we even get to the fact that there is a 24x super wide optical zoom on board, this compact is shaping up as an ideal holiday companion.
The focal range here extends all the way from 25mm to 600mm in 35mm film camera terms, thus offering a breath-taking wealth of creative framing opportunities, as well as the ability to drag the faraway close. As if this wasn't enough, there is a Super-resolution Zoom that doubles the zoom capability to an incredible 48x with barely any noticeable loss in image quality.
The only camera you'll want to go steady with
The Olympus SH-50 is that stable companion you've been looking for. Even at its highest zoom setting, and in low light, the SH-50 combines the best in its manufacturer's iHS technologies (intelligence, High Sensitivity and High Speed) with its world beating Image Stabilisation (IS) system to essentially eliminate the effects of hand wobble and resulting blur.
Whilst 3-axis Photo IS proves its mettle as the most potent IS for still photos ever installed in a compact digital camera, the Hybrid 5-axis Movie IS, also on board the SH-50, is the first digital/mechanical hybrid of its kind in any class of compact camera.
Whereas most optical IS systems only compensate for tipping (pitch) or side-to-side yaw (the way a skidding car rotates on a bend), 3-axis Photo IS also counteracts movement around the rotary axis - the imaginary line that runs straight through the lens from the front of the camera to the back. This is vital with handheld shots at high zoom ratios, because even the slightest tremble could be magnified disproportionately, resulting in a softened image.

Even more refined is Hybrid 5-axis Movie IS, which utilises a mixture of powerful mechanical and digital image stabilisation to affect five different planes of movement - mechanical for pitch, yaw and rotary shift; sensor-based digital for vertical and horizontal shift (along the extended plane of the lens surface). The resulting stability of Hybrid 5-axis Movie IS is such that you can film on the move. Simply touch the LCD screen to record blur-free Full HD movies without pausing to break stride. You can even zoom in and out as you walk along.
Additionally a Multi Recording option allows for stills and video to be captured simultaneously, or for video recording to take place immediately before and after taking a photo.
Compact size, DSLR-like specifications
The SH-50 comes with the above technology that has trickled down from Olympus' flagship high-end compact system camera, the OM-D E-M5, plus there is manual control on offer too, with the ability to tweak aperture and exposure settings in M mode.
Noise is reduced and low light imagery dramatically improved by the combination of a backlit 16 megapixel CMOS sensor with a latest generation TruePic VI image processor plus excellent optics, a top setting of ISO6400, Fast AF, a smattering of automated innovations such as Handheld Starlight Mode, and i-Auto for superb results however challenging the conditions.

However far away you are, you're never too far
With the Olympus SH-50 there is no need to get closer to your subject or pause to swap the lens, thanks to a broad 25-600mm focal range in 35mm film terms, which allows for spontaneous snapping of subjects near or far.
Added to this is the Super-resolution Zoom capability, which doubles the core optical zoom capability to an equivalent 48x without the noticeable drop in quality usually associated with digital zooms, plus Telephoto Macro, which allows for use of a zoom equivalent to 600mm as close to the subject as 40cm. This enables photographers to achieve professional looking results with blurred backgrounds without worrying about disturbing sensitive ‘sitters' such as insects or plants.
This really is one lens that does it all.
Chose your format and hit record
For all its head-spinning innovation the Olympus SH-50 remains easy to use. When you want to capture and share a video for example, the camera allows you to choose the best format to suit your needs - whether that is Full HD 1080/60i HD, 1080/30p, or up to 240fps high-speed movies.

11 Magic Filters for turning the everyday into the extraordinary
Specifically designed to expand the creative potential of digital photography, this impressive function of the SH-50 utilises in-camera image processing technology to effortlessly transform the everyday into extraordinary scenes. Simple to operate, the filters allow users to create entirely new worlds with their images. What's more, most of the filters can be used when recording video (except Fragmented and Sparkle) as well as shooting stills.
Users can choose from Punk, Pop Art, Pin Hole, Fish-Eye, Soft Focus, Sparkle, Watercolour, Reflection, Miniature, Fragmented or Dramatic.
- Punk: Pose like Sid ‘n' Nancy and have your world turned dayglo pink, with this fun feature that transforms your photos into crudely photocopied fanzine style images, but in a good way.
- Pop Art: In the tradition of Andy Warhol, this effect enhances colours, making them stronger and more vivid. It creates high-impact pictures that express the happy, light-hearted feeling of the pop art style.
- Fish-Eye: With its distorted 180-degree perspective, this filter reproduces the dramatic effect of a fish-eye lens. It lends a new perspective to the whole scene with a "round" effect.
- Pin Hole: For an ethereal feel, Pin Hole reduces the peripheral brightness of images like an image seen through a pinhole. Added to this is a unique colour tone that results in a style that has an air of secrecy or portrays the feeling of being lost in another dimension or space.
- Soft Focus: Give your portraits that romantic otherworldly look beloved of wedding photographers.
- Sparkle (photos only): A Magic Filter that truly imparts a sprinkling of fairy dust, adding twinkling reflections to shiny objects.
- Watercolour: With this option pictures are transformed into a watercolour painting framed by soft light.
- Reflection: A simulation of a magical horizontal reflection of your subject: for example as if it or they were standing next to perfectly still water.
- Miniature: Capture your subject and present them as if on a toy town scale.
- Fragmented (photos only): Lends photographs a tiled, collage-like effect, as if an image has been cut up and reassembled.
- Dramatic: Enhances detail, for example in shadows and skies, to provide greater impact and drama to the everyday.
