The Olympus SP-800UZ: Big zoom, large resolution, compact
For photographers who think big but don’t want the inconvenience of heavy-duty equipment, there’s the 14 megapixel resolution SP-800UZ digital camera from Olympus’s Ultra Zoom series. This must-have compact packs in a colossal 30x wide optical zoom equivalent to an incredibly broad focal range of 28-840mm*. Also providing greater creative freedom is an integral memory of a whopping 2GB for the capture of both photos and HD movies, plus a large 3-inch, 230k-dot resolution LCD monitor that offers a widescreen 16:9 format display.
The most powerful ultra zoom compact to date not only packs in real features that photographers want, including Dual Image Stabilisation to prevent image blur when shooting at maximum telephoto (zoom) setting and HDMI output for hooking the camera up to an HD TV set, it looks great too in sophisticated, eye-catching Titanium Silver.
Ensuring expandability the SP-800UZ further features a spare slot for a removable SD card, plus the ability to quickly browse a plethora of shots courtesy of its Photo Surfing feature and powerful image tagging software. Ease of use is also guaranteed by an in-camera reference manual, with a quick explanation of a feature or function always on hand. Innovation and versatility in one convenient package: that’s the Olympus SP-800UZ.

Magic Filters: turn the everyday into the extraordinary
Elevating the Olympus SP-800UZ above the crowd and specifically designed to expand the creative potential of digital photography, Magic Filters utilise in-camera image processing technology to effortlessly transform everyday scenes into extraordinary ones. Simple to operate, the filters allow users to create entirely new worlds with their images.
Pop Art: In the tradition of the late Andy Warhol, this effect enhances colours, making them stronger and more vivid. It creates high-impact pictures that express the happy, light-hearted feeling of the pop art style.
Fish-Eye: With its distorted 180-degree perspective, this filter reproduces the dramatic effect of a fish-eye lens. It lends a new perspective to the whole scene with a “round” effect.
Sketch: This filter gives the impression that subjects have been sketched on the fly by an artist just at the moment that inspiration struck. Images are transformed into line drawings for improvised, highly creative results.
Pin Hole: For an ethereal feel, Pin Hole reduces the peripheral brightness of images to make them appear as if seen through a pinhole. Added to this is a unique colour tone that results in a style that has an air of secrecy, visually portraying the feeling of being lost in another dimension or space.
As an additional aid to pointing and shooting, the SP-800UZ’s Advanced Face Detection Technology searches for faces in a composition and recognises them as the main subject. It then automatically puts them in focus and optimally adjusts exposure to create an image that’s sharp in the right places and ideally exposed. Up to 16 faces can be detected.
Another impressive new function is AF tracking. This system tracks a moving subject automatically and keeps it continually in focus for pictures that are optimally focused and exposed. It also memorises subject data, so that even when the subject goes out of frame it can resume tracking when it reappears.
So photographers never miss a trick – or a subject – the SP-800UZ features High-Speed 10fps sequential shooting. This ensures that the camera is an adept a tool for photographing sports events and action sequences as it is for shooting wide-angle landscapes and expansive panoramas.
Ensuring that subjects always look their very best, another helping hand is provided by your very own personal make up assistant in the form of the SP-800UZ’s Beauty Mode. It’s fast too, touching up the appearance of faces even as the shot is being taken, making skin appear smoother, brighter and more youthful.
Meanwhile, the innovative i-Auto (intelligent-Auto) mode uses advanced automatic detection technology to allow the camera to recognise commonly used scenes automatically. They enable the capture of perfect photos without any need for manual settings.
Liven up your memories with the addition of HD Movie Recording with sound. Capture and share video footage with friends and family, then download to your home PC for posterity or set up a show on your HD TV set thanks to the camera’s HDMI connectivity.

Providing two-fold protection, the aforementioned Dual Image Stabilisation helps to avoid image blur caused by camera shake or fast-moving subjects. It combines high ISO values with a CCD-based mechanical image stabiliser, where a built-in gyro sensor detects camera movement and adjusts the CCD accordingly.
Olympus now also offers, an integrated photo browsing and organising software. Using the software on a PC, images can be organised by person, by place or by event. The information tagged in each photo – using face recognition for faces and GPS tagging for places – allows selected pictures to be viewed on a PC.
Scroll Dial: The dial is a new control allowing users to simply turn the dial with the tip of a finger to scroll through images and the new improved user interface.
The SP-800UZ further features USB charging for the ultimate convenience and portability. Connect the camera to a computer and let the battery charge while you save and organise your images. The supplied super-compact AC adaptor also makes it easy to charge the battery while you're travelling.
And of course, selecting Photo Surfing from the Playback menu allows users to browse pictures by date, scene, person, place or image collection in-camera.
So now, thanks to the Olympus SP-800UZ, photographers truly can realise the scale of their ambition.
* Equivalent to a 35mm camera

A really great light travel camera,

This review is from: Olympus SP-800UZ Digital Camera - Titanium Silver (14MP, 30x Wide Optical Zoom) 3.0 inch LCD (Electronics)
This is my 7th digital camera not including mobile phone cameras which I also use frequently because of the convenience. First I must say that the pictures on Amazon do not do justice to how small and light this camera is. With a small camera bag it goes over your shoulder and you hardly notice it. I also have an Olympus 8M SLR. My main reason for buying this camera was to avoid having to carry my SLR on long trips with 2 lenses and fiddling about changing lenses when trying to take good photos is always a pain. I have certainly achieved this objective. And no power supply to carry either (if you have a computer with you). Unfortunately the charging cable is not the new mobile phone standard micro USB at the camera end, but at least it is the same as my SLR cable. For a small camera with a good lens this is a great pick.As written in other reviews, this camera is let down a bit by the lack of RAW image storage. The JPG processing seems in general to be fine and the results are stunning - especially on high zoom. The autostitch, once you get used to how it works, is very effective and whilst you might get better results on a computer, who has the time to do so much post processing? I have found a couple of photos with bright green and bright pink where the results looked a little artificial due to the processing but otherwise I can't really fault the results. For the first time with a camera (on a tripod) I managed to take a picture of the Orion constellation and the result is pretty good. The pictures are around 5-6M each - this compares favourably with the 14.4M for my SLR (RAW) but I think I'd still rather have the RAW. I have taken about 700 pictures in 2 weeks with this camera and never used more than 20% of my 16G SD card. The battery has never expired either, although I am charging it every day that I use it. I have been using this camera in Bangkok, Thailand, where it is very humid outside. One evening I took it out and the lens misted over, but when I wiped the lens with a cloth it was still misty - the moisture had penetrated the camera itself. I understand that this is impossible to mitigate with manufacturing design - what I have learned to do is not to wipe the lens but to wait until the lens de-fogs and then the internal part of the lens is clear as well. The night time capability of this camera is impressive and the flash works well too. It is unbelievable how far they have come since 2006 when I bought my SLR in terms of low light performance. The movie mode is great too and I can dispense with a small video camera I was carrying around too. The SP-800UZ is small enough to carry around when you want video. The only slight disappointment here is that you cannot record sound and use zoom in the same movie. So overall, comparing this with my other cameras, I would much rather travel with this one even though my SLR gives slightly better results (with a bit more patience and in good light).

Wow!,

This review is from: Olympus SP-800UZ Digital Camera - Titanium Silver (14MP, 30x Wide Optical Zoom) 3.0 inch LCD (Electronics)
To start, I am not a professional photographer but have been using digital cameras for the last 10 years or so. This is just the best I have ever had or seen. I have had the camera for a week now and have not used all the features of the camera but am working the way through it. The zoom features is awesome even with my sometimes unsteady hand. The quality of the shots is impressive. The only thing that lets it down is the included software for the PC. This is slow and clunky, I much prefer just to download pictures using Picassa and any editing that I want to do (Not much really, its either good or really bad, in which case I delete) I do in Photoshop or some other software. All in all I am very impressed with this camera.

Light and easy to hold, I found it very easy to work out, but I have been using Olympus cameras now for several years and still use a Olympus tough 8000 which I am very happy with but wanted something as easy to use but with a better zoom, I have managed to take photo's of Deer grazing in a field without them knowing I was there, fantastic just what I wanted it for, but without the price tag of a SLR.It arrived within 2 days of ordering it but was disapointed I could not use it right away, as I had to connect it to the computer first to load all the information. all in all a fantstic bit of kit.
