Excellent for the money
on 28 November 2012
I bought this as one of Amazon's deals of the week, £140 for a camera that has a huge wealth of features.
Firstly it has a large 26x optical zoom, added to a digital zoom that can take the total up to x108, this is far more than I am used to and the results can be seen in the photos of the moon above, these were taken using the camera's night mode, just held in the hand, thanks to the excellent image stabilising systems on board, they came out rather well.
The camera takes up to 14MP images, and full HD video at 1080P, still pictures benefit from an ISO range between 100 and 3200, it must be said though that images at 400 and above can produce rather noisy images, there is also a setting for High ISO to minimise blurring.
There is an IAuto mode, for taking quick and easy pictures, but I did find using this a bit disappointing, as the pictures tended to over expose a bit, I wanted a camera that would challenge me slightly after years of just using point and shoot models, so I mainly use the P setting which affords full control over the image, macro and super macro can be selected, super macro will focus as close as 5CM, actually a step down from my Canon point and shoot, which could focus at 1CM, but it is good enough, exposure can be adjusted, white balance, and ISO setting, there are two bridge pictures above one taken on auto then one on P setting, I feel the Auto image has lost some detail of the scene personally.
Also scenes can be selected, these are, portrait, Landscapes, Nightscene, Night portraits, Sport, Indoor, Candle, Self Portrait, Sunset, Fireworks, Cuisine, Documents, Beach and Snow, Cat, and dog setting, the last two in particular are great, as the camera will only take a shot of the pet, when they are looking at the camera, last is Backlight HDR, which takes the brightest image possible, by combining several.
3D photography is possible, but not tested by me as I do not have a 3D tv.
Then there is the Magic settings, these include adding a mozaic effect, a cartoon book look, and pin hole, fish eye and a few others, which should add a real spin on pictures, which can even be turned into drawings.
Beauty, is a setting that removes blemishes etc from faces, adds soft focus, and works very well, and the last setting is for panoramic scenes, several photos are taken, after each one a target appears on screen and when this is lined up another is taken, when up to five are stored, the camera stitches them together.
With all these options to choose from, I thought it might be very daunting to use the camera, but there are on screen tips to help the user along the way.
The screen I have found to be excellent, and can be seen clearly in bright sunlight, the only downer I have found is it works off a lithium battery that can be charged by the camera or an external charger, which is not supplied, it does say it needs a few charges to be at full capacity, on my first charge, I was only able to take 128 photos, and a couple of short movies, this was with heavy use of the zoom lens though, which it does say in the online manual drastically reduces the battery life, as do movies, I have bought a spare one, so hopefully this will negate the problem, I really hope after a while the battery lasts a bit longer.
Overall though an excellent camera for the price, gives the option of taking quick and easy photos, with plenty of other features for more challenging work.
