Keen to specialise your photography in those styles that interest you most?

The OM-D E-M1 gives you incredible access to an interchangeable system of 65 Micro Four Thirds and Four Thirds lenses. This incredible versatility is all thanks to the OM-D E-M1's compatibility with both Micro Four Thirds and now all Four Thirds lenses* on top. It means there is always precisely the right lens available for the specialist kind of photos you want to take, as well as the right lens for any subject and any type of shooting conditions.

The OM-D E-M1 also brings out the best in each lens by applying DUAL FAST AF with the addition of Phase Detection AF to complement Contrast AF, for extremely fast and incredible visual capture.

* MMF-3 adapter required to use Four Third lenses.

Engineered to outperform D-SLR cameras

Looking for a camera that delivers consistently high performance and image quality?

The OM-D E-M1 has adopted the existing first-class OM-D imaging technologies and taken them up a notch for the consistently sharp, vivid, true-to-life imaging results you expect.

Enhanced WiFi connectivity now gives you more control and creative scope from your smartphone, including the adjustment of your shutter speed and aperture. The DUAL FAST AF system utilises both On-chip Phase Detection AF and Contrast AF, enabling any lens you're using to perform with incredible speed and accuracy. The 5-axis image stabilisation is now even more intelligent for optimised results, and the Electronic Viewfinder now gives you a 1.3x larger view compared to an average DSLR camera, enhanced creative options such as colour manipulation with the new Colour Creator function, and far greater overall shooting accuracy with the help of useful aids such as adaptive brightness technology.

Dust, splash and freezeproof: the all-terrain, all-weather OM-D E-M1

The OM-D E-M1 allows you to shoot in all environments and it's practically impenetrable magnesium alloy body with 60 gasket rings for special sealing gives you highly weather-resistant protection wherever you take your camera. The in-built SSWF (Supersonic Wave Filter) also generates ultrasonic vibrations exceeding 30,000 times per second, effectively blasting dust particles away from the protective dust filter in front of the OM-D E-M1's image sensor. The OM-D E-M1 also provides you with reliable operation down to -10°C.

The new standard M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-40mm f2.8 PRO zoom lens also includes a mount with the same type of sealing as the OM-D E-M1 body. Two other compatible accessories, the Power Battery Holder HLD-7 and Four Thirds Adapter MMF-3, also contribute to making the entire system highly impermeable to sand, dust, and water spray.

Unique to OM-D: 5-axis image stabilisation for your shots and movies

Interested in the option of handheld shooting in situations where you would normally need to use a tripod? The OM-D E-M1's incredibly high-tech 5-axis image stabilisation system makes this possible. Thanks to control algorithms, image stabilisation at longer shutter speeds is more effective than ever.

The IS-AUTO feature now automatically detects when you wish to take vertical, horizontal and angular panning shots, controlling the level of correction for the desired panning effects. Another big advantage of this in-body IS system is that it compensates for camera shake with every single type of lens available, including Four Thirds and Micro Four Thirds lenses, and with a combination of 5-axis IS and Multi-Motion IS, powerful image stabilisation takes effect to minimise blurs and jolts when shooting movies as well.

DUAL FAST AF. Get the speed and accuracy of all autofocus systems

FAST AF - the ultra-fast autofocus system brings even more speed and accuracy to all Micro Four Thirds and Four Thirds lenses. DUAL FAST AF utilises both On-chip Phase Detection AF and Contrast AF, automatically switching to the optimum AF system for the lens you're using and the situation you're shooting in.

On-chip Phase Detection AF makes full use of its 37 AF targets whenever a Four Thirds System compliant lens optimally designed for Phase Detection AF is attached, for excellent quality results. When a lens is attached that conforms to the MFT standard, the Contrast AF method is automatically selected. Its AF points have been expanded from 35 to 81 for even greater precision, including the option of Super Spot AF for pinpointing details, e.g. in macro shots. When a lens that conforms to the Micro Four Thirds standard is attached and C-AF is selected for subject tracking and continuous AF, On-chip Phase Detection AF and Contrast detection AF are used together. This results in significant improvement of C-AF tracking performance over traditional mirrorless models, with a maximum sequential shooting performance of 6.5 fps.

Advanced Electronic Viewfinder. Now with a 1.3x larger view than the average D-SLR

The OM-D E-M1 features an advanced EVF system that excels both in terms of screen size and greater creative scope. The built-in Electronic Viewfinder gives you a 1.3x larger view even than high-end D-SLR cameras, plus razor-sharp 2,360k dot resolution and just 29 ms time lag. It is also equipped with state-of-the-art technology that enhances your control and lets you check what finished images will look like through the viewfinder, for enhanced shooting accuracy. The Adaptive Brightness Technology, for example, automatically adjusts the brightness of the viewfinder's backlight according to changes in the environmental light, assuring excellent visibility at all times. Now all four of the operations involved in photographic image creation - gradation, focusing, composition and colour tone control, can also be adjusted while checking the final result on the viewfinder screen.

Full control of aperture, shutter speed and Live Bulb from your smartphone

The OM-D E-M1 is equipped with a built-in Wi-Fi function that gives you more control from your smartphone. When using the OLYMPUS Image Share (O.I.Share) smartphone app, you can share your images with ease, operate the shutter wirelessly from your smartphone while viewing the Live View screen, and geotag your photos using location information from your smartphone. You can now even switch between the various shooting modes (P, A, S, M, iAUTO) and wirelessly adjust settings such as the shutter speed, aperture value, and exposure compensation from your smartphone. The new Live Bulb shooting mode now also lets you capture amazing long-exposure shots without any camera shake.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mirrorless Camera 13 Nov 2013
Style Name:Body Only
Have used this for about a month now and have to say it has exceeded expectations, despite having previously read every review going. Upgraded from an E-M5, which I'm guessing a few will be considering. Points to consider vs. the E-M5 and generally are :-

i) yes it's larger, but I absolutely had to use the additional landscape grip on the E-M5 or it was ergonomically unusable in my hands. With the grip on the size difference is not significant and the E-M1 doesn't have the inconvenience of having to remove the grip to replace the battery. Also the controls are MUCH better placed (and spaced) on the E-M1, even with the grip added to the E-M5. The 2x2 control layout (the front and back dials have their function changed by flicking the switch next to the viewfinder) means you can easily change most major settings quickly with your right hand - with your eye fixed to the viewfinder. Speaking of which...

ii) the viewfinder is terrific. Large and very detailed. This, combined with the ergonomic control placement, make the camera a joy to use. I used to rely on the rear screen on the E-M5 for quite a few control changes and for reviewing shots, but the EM-1 viewfinder is so good and the control layout so intuitive that I hardly ever use the rear screen. Photos can now be reviewed through the viewfinder, which I prefer and which is not possible on the E-M5. It's a much improved experience. Anyone concerned about transitioning from an optical viewfinder really should go to a camera shop and try this camera before dismissing EVFs.

iii) 1/8000 shutter speed and ISO 100 combine to really help shooting wide open for shallow depth of field in bright conditions. The E-M5 was always maxing out at 1/4000 ISO 200 when using e.g. the Panaleica 25mm f1.4 or Olympus 75mm f1.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply sublime 29 April 2014
Style Name:M.Zuiko 12-40mm Lens
I purchased this superb camera in January 2014 and since I have been travelling through SE Asia, Oz and NZ. I am not going to bore you with details of what a great piece of camera EM1 is but I could not emphasise the enjoyment and ease of use offered to the operator by this little gem. I couldn't think of any better camera to travel the world with. It's robust - dropped it a couple of times and knocked it hard a few times, got splashed by sea water on a boat trip, survived the heat and dust bowls of Australia and rain and snow of NZ - it is simply that rugged and reliable.
Having previously used SLR cameras I struggled with size and weight of them but with EM1 this hasn't been an issue - place a Nikon 600 next to it and you will see what I mean. Especially with the use of a pancake lens the size is almost comparable to a compact camera. You can see the size difference by clicking on this link [...]
There are tonnes of lenses to choose from which are all reasonably priced compared with full frame or 35 mm lenses which is a bonus.
Overall, I cannot recommend this camera highly enough. It's modern and reliable, packed with advance technology, looks the part, compact and lightweight with superb image quality, it's not another Canon or Nikon so what more would I want?

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime 27 Jan 2014
Style Name:M.Zuiko 12-40mm Lens|Verified Purchase
I'm a (very) keen amateur photographer. Up until recently I was a Canon user (10D, 40D, currently have the 7D). When the Panasonic DMC-GX1 came out, a friend of mine persuaded me to try it, and I haven't looked back. The EM-1 is a simply sublime, easy-to-use masterpiece. It's won camera-of-the-year prizes all over the place, and with good reason. Here is a summary of the key points from my initial use...

1. Ergonomically fabulous... This camera sits in my hand like it's meant to be there. It's dimensions are just about perfect. After 10 years of successively bigger and bigger (bloated) Canon DSLR bodies, the EM-1 comes as a breath of fresh air. Curious? Check out [...] for on-screen scaled comparisons between popular makes and models. This camera reminds me very much of the Minolta 7000 I had in the late 1980s.
2. Sublime quality... The 16MP sensor gives rich, detailed images, helped in no small part by the pin-sharp focus delivered from the 81-point contrast-detect auto-focus system. The best of the M43 lenses are just so quick to focus it's disconcerting. The supplied 12-40mm lens is *easily* as good as my Canon 24-70mm f2.8L - which is "professional" glass...
3. Weight and Bulk - The EM-1 with the supplied 12-40mm f2.8 Lens (24-80 equivalent) weights 975 grammes. My EOS7D with the 24-70 f2.8L Lens weighs 1,927 grammes - almost a full kilo more. Try carrying the Canon around for a day's shooting, and your neck and arms will notice the difference.
4. Features and performance... There's little missing from this camera (see below for specifics). 6fps with full auto-focus, 11fps with focus for the first shot... Fantastic human interface, with plenty of reprogrammable buttons (not far short of button-for-everything), HDR mode, time-lapse movie-mode, etc, etc...

5.0 out of 5 stars What a picture......what a photograph. 14 Nov 2013
By Quiverbow TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Style Name:Body Only
I used to own an Olympus E520, my first ever DSLR and a camera I was very pleased with (actually, I still have it). It performed admirably but with the company dropping the E system and the list of available lenses a bit restricted, there was no option to take a step upwards unless I changed brands. Then the OM-D EM-5 came along. Smaller, but with far greater capabilities it looked interesting. Then, when I was in a position to change over, Olympus announces an addition to the OMD EM-5, the EM-1. That's addition, not replacement.

I'm not comparing this to anything from Canon, Nikon as I can't, but I can measure it against my E520. Whilst that camera did a sterling job, and is still a worthy piece of kit, it now looks rather dated. The EM-1, on the other hand, is akin to the cockpit of the Space Shuttle.

I found it to be a similar size and weight to my old E520 but that is where the comparison begins and ends. The LCD screen is wonderfully bright and clear and is five times better than that 520, being slightly bigger too. I have never used a camera with an EVF before and I am surprised at how some people think negatively about such a thing. The one used here has a 0.74x magnification. All the shooting information is in there and I think it is great to be able to see the effects of the filters, (two) HDR modes, colour hues and saturation, shadow and highlights, etc. as it happens before you take the photo. (Yes, I realise this won't really work with moving subjects but I rarely take that type of photo.)

I never got my hands on the EM-5 but it seems the buttons here have been moved around. I know there were some complaints about them being `plastic' and difficult to access.
