I was not certain that I needed flash as a) the new Pens are great in reasonable available light and b) I had an FL-20 flash already.
All other Olympus flashes and compatibles I tried work but are very top heavy. Having eventually tried an FL-14 I found that it was better balanced and seemed to give more consistent results than even the FL-20.
In summary the Olympus EP-1 and the FL-14 is a fun system that is very different to my slrs but will produce first class results in the right hands.

I was considering selling the E-P1 due to the lack of built in flash. Although the photos outdoors are superb the lack of flash didn't really make it a practical camera for everyday use. I bought the flash as the obvious cheaper alternative to changing the camera and I'm very satisfied with the result. The flash looks great on the camera and is very compact and so can be left on without getting in the way. The TTL system is great as expected and the limited settings available are very easy to select. The flash will power down when the camera is switched off which is useful. It comes with a pouch for storage. Overall the flash is a bit expensive but worth transforming the E-p1 to a far more useful all round camera.
One small niggle is that when the flash is in place it makes it awkward to see the top of the dial used to select which mode you want to use.
