The Olympus FE-5050 & FE-5040: Get closer with ease
Big zoom power but not a large form factor: that’s what the affordable 14 megapixel FE-5050 and 12 megapixel FE-5040 from Olympus deliver in spades. Available in a kaleidoscope of striking colours, these easy to use pocket compacts offer both a wide-angle 5x optical zoom (26-130mm*) to expand the amount of detail you can cram into your shots, plus allow creativity to run riot courtesy of six Magic Filters. These include new visually dynamic Wedding and Rock digital effects.
A one button, one function design principle makes it simple to capture great shots at every turn, from group portraits to stunning panoramas. These slim (just 18.8mm in depth) and elegant cameras come packed with technical innovations that belie their unobtrusively pocket sized dimensions. Latest features include Advanced Face Detection Technology (FE-5050: up to 16 faces, FE-5040: 12 faces) subject and scene recognising and enhancing iAuto mode for point and shoot simplicity, plus AF tracking and new Digital Image Stabilisation Plus (FE-5050). This reduces noise (grain) while providing better colour reproduction. Further incorporating a slot for widely available SD cards and coming supplied with a convenient USB charger and large 2.7-inch LCD screen, the FE-5050 and FE-5040 amount to fantastic performance at an incredible price.
Magic Filters: elevate the commonplace to the fantastical
Wedding: New addition to the range, creating a soft tone that lends pictures an ethereal, otherworldly look, as if subjects are bathed in a heavenly light. Details such as hair and flower petals are maintained. Rock: The second new filter creates a mismatch of colours to provide striking contrasts: for example colouring skin pink but clothes and background in black. Rock-tastic dude! Pop Art: In the tradition of Andy Warhol, this effect enhances colours, making them stronger and more vivid. It creates high-impact pictures that express the happy, light-hearted feeling of the pop art style. Fish-Eye: With its distorted 180-degree perspective, this filter reproduces the dramatic effect of a fish-eye lens. It lends a new perspective to the whole scene with a “round” effect. Sketch: This filter gives the impression that subjects have been sketched on the fly by an artist at the moment of inspiration; images are transformed into line drawings for improvised, creative results. Pin Hole: This filter reduces the peripheral brightness to recreate an image as if seen through a pinhole. Added to this is a unique colour tone that results in a style that has an air of secrecy, or portrays the feeling of being lost in another dimension or space.
Face Detection Technology
Face Detection Technology searches for faces in a composition and recognises them as the main subject. It then automatically puts them in focus and optimally adjusts exposure to create an image that’s sharp in the right places and ideally exposed. Advanced Face Detection Technology can detect up to 16 faces, and Face Detection Technology up to 12.
AF tracking
Another impressive function is AF tracking. This system tracks the moving subject and keeps it continually in focus for pictures that are optimally focused and exposed. It also memorises subject data even when the subject goes out of frame and resumes tracking when it reappears.
i-Auto (intelligent-Auto) mode
The innovative i-Auto (intelligent-Auto) mode uses advanced automatic detection technology to allow the camera to recognise the five most commonly used scenes automatically. They enable the capture of perfect photos without any need for manual settings.
Digital Image Stabilisation
Digital Image Stabilisation is special shooting mode, where the camera automatically increases ISO sensitivity to allow shorter shutter speeds. This helps to avoid image blur caused by camera shake or by fast-moving objects.
Digital Image Stabilisation Plus
Digital Image Stabilisation Plus is a new mode that provides better image quality by using higher ISO sensitivities than regular Digital Image Stabilisation. It allows for the use of faster shutter speeds, reducing camera movement and subject blur. Additionally, images shot in this mode have less noise and better colour reproduction than images shot in standard Digital Image Stabilisation mode.
Dual Image Stabilisation
Providing two-fold protection, Dual Image Stabilisation helps to avoid image blur caused by camera shake or fast-moving subjects. It combines high ISO values with a CCD-based mechanical image stabiliser, where a built-in gyro sensor detects camera movement and adjusts the CCD accordingly.
New software
Olympus now offers an integrated photo browsing and organising software. Using the software on a PC, images can be organised by person, by place or by event. The information tagged in each photo allows selected pictures to be viewed on a PC. Available in a choice of Starry Silver, Classic Black, Champagne Gold, or Dusty Pink the FE-5050’s looks chic, whilst composing and viewing great shots on its 6.9cm/2.7” 230k dot resolution LCD, is a cinch. Alternatively, the similarly featured FE-5040 is available in a choice of Starry Silver, Classic Black, Raspberry Red, or Copper Orange. *Equivalent to a 35mm camera
