I couldn't believe my luck when I discovered that this book had been written especially for owners of my most recent purchase. At the time I was working my way through the manufacturer's instruction manual, which I found tedious and confusing. "Dummies" has not only been a fantastic way to understand the workings of the camera - it really gets to the logic of how its many features work, and uncovers quite a few that I would never have discovered - it has also been a lesson in the art of photography.
For anyone new to the world outside the compact camera, this book hits the spot by being both informative and entertaining. It is not going to be of great value to the experienced amateur or pro, but the E-PL1 is probably not a camera for those segments either. So if you buy this camera, and there are many reasons why you should, then make absolutely sure that you add this book to the bundle.

at present I am half way through this great book, to say it helps me is an understatment. Beautifully presented well written, humerous even but above all it tells you the sometimes complicated explanation of Digital Photography in a simplistic manner. Get it today!

This is the first 'Dummies' book I can wholeheartedly recommend. The E-PL1 is a great camera, but the manual is a big let-down, it explains nothing. That's where this book comes in. The big plus is that it is written in English, whereas you have the feeling the Oly manual has been translated from another language. I took it (and the camera!) with me on holiday and constantly referred to it. If you've got the Pen camera, get this book. Everything will then become clear.

The Olympus PEN E-PL1 is very easy to use and the pre-programmed functions allow you to make great pictures. Why would you need a book?
First of all - there is a world of more advanced functions to be discovered that will allow you to make even better pics or make higher quality ones in specific conditions.
Secondly: the Olympus PEN website is great, the camera is great but the manual is....how to put this politely... a real manual. Kind of useless... Not all features are described and it certainly never tells you WHY certain functions exist.
I ordered the Dummies book after using the camera for 2 months and making 2000+ pictures. I do not consider myself a dummy so buying the book was a big step....BUT: I've learned very useful tips on almost every page of the book. It explains in very clear wordings HOW, WHEN and WHY you should use certain functions and the results start to become very visible in my pics.
A must have for every E-PL1 owner that wants to get the best out of this super camera!

Having moved up from a point-and-shoot to an Olympus EPM-1 (PEN Mini) I was bewildered by the various menus and settings, and did not find the manual that came with the camera was much help.
Although this title is for the PEN E-PL1, I found that in almost cases the same settings and usage applies to the EPM-1. It shows how to access and use features in the hidden depths of the settings. Thanks to the clear explanations and illustrations I now have a thorough working knowledge of my camera and am able to get out of the "AUTO" setting.
Really very pleased indeed with this book.

The new model Olympus E-PL2, released in the UK in February 2011, has some technical upgrades from the E-PL1 including a new 14-42 mm lens. There are minor alterations to the user controls where, basically some buttons have been moved around. However all functionality of the E-PL2 is as for the E-PL1 and (I think) all menus remain as for the earlier model. That means that the "E-PL1 For Dummies" book remains just as useful. Certainly I am finding the book perfect as I get to know my new E-PL2.
