I'm a freelance writer, and after years of fiddling around with microcassettes and an Olympus micro recorder, I decided the prices had dropped sufficiently for me to upgrade to digital - and I couldn't be any happier that I did!

I bought the DS-2400 at the same time as the AS-2400 trnscription kit (not from Amazon) and the combination of the two, together with the Olympus transcription software, have made recording and transcribing interviews incredibly straightforward.

So far I've used the recorder to record conversations via speakerphone, one-to-one, and also with the conference setting in a meeting room. All the recordings have been superb, and the lack of background hiss compared to recording onto tape is a real blessing.

Transferring recordings from the recorder onto my PC requires a single mouse click, and takes just seconds (I've experienced none of the speed problems reported by other reviewers). It's also reasuring to know that I now have a permanent record of all conversations on my PC, rather than needing to keep a deskful of microcassettes 'just in case'.

The transcription kit is also good, and pretty much a carbon copy of my old analogue version - although from what I can see there's no way of having the recording 'skip back' a second or so each time you pause it, which I always found incredibly helpful. A good feature of the software though is that the control window stays open on top of any other applications - Word, PowerPoint etc - that you might have open, so if you're not using the transcription kit you can pause and restart recordings without having to keep on dropping down your other open windows in order to do so.

All in all then, a very smart, stylish piece of kit that's easy to use and does exactly what you need it to. 5 stars without any shadow of a doubt.

I needed a dictaphone for some university work, but didn't realise my mum would splash out on this!!

I've used it loads, I love how you can record onto an SD card, and you can connect it to the computer too!! It's quite easy to use, and isn't that big or heavy.

I did however expect it to have some fancy functions though, like being able to charge it on a dock, or name the files. Although there are folders, you can't rename them, so I was slightly disappointed because it was very expensive and with such space you'd expect to be able to organise the files to some extent! In some respects, many phones are better!!

You can change the file names when you connect it to the computer, but again it isn't how I was expecting it to be.
But I guess it does its job and I will be using it for many years to come...

crap 'rec' switch 8 Mar 2011
Like a previous reviewer, i used the older version no trouble at all. This one however, the 'rec' switch (which both records and pauses) is too small and not tactile - in cold weather you don't know if you have pressed it or not so useless for outdoor work. Besides that, the switch itself is erratic. I have tested extensively and about 10% of the time it doesn't respond to first click and I can't count the number of times I have been merrily dictating to find that it is on pause - or mumbling to myself when it is in record mode!

hence I have to keep a firm eye on the screen which is really pants!

Review in both directions is also a bit poor - I find a tape machine is better than this to find the bit you are looking for.

Add the files size issue as mentioned elsewhere and this machine is somewhat below par in my opinion. Something of a time waster for me
