I'm a freelance writer, and after years of fiddling around with microcassettes and an Olympus micro recorder, I decided the prices had dropped sufficiently for me to upgrade to digital - and I couldn't be any happier that I did!
I bought the DS-2400 at the same time as the AS-2400 trnscription kit (not from Amazon) and the combination of the two, together with the Olympus transcription software, have made recording and transcribing interviews incredibly straightforward.
So far I've used the recorder to record conversations via speakerphone, one-to-one, and also with the conference setting in a meeting room. All the recordings have been superb, and the lack of background hiss compared to recording onto tape is a real blessing.
Transferring recordings from the recorder onto my PC requires a single mouse click, and takes just seconds (I've experienced none of the speed problems reported by other reviewers). It's also reasuring to know that I now have a permanent record of all conversations on my PC, rather than needing to keep a deskful of microcassettes 'just in case'.
The transcription kit is also good, and pretty much a carbon copy of my old analogue version - although from what I can see there's no way of having the recording 'skip back' a second or so each time you pause it, which I always found incredibly helpful. A good feature of the software though is that the control window stays open on top of any other applications - Word, PowerPoint etc - that you might have open, so if you're not using the transcription kit you can pause and restart recordings without having to keep on dropping down your other open windows in order to do so.
All in all then, a very smart, stylish piece of kit that's easy to use and does exactly what you need it to. 5 stars without any shadow of a doubt.
