5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning sound quality, 23 Nov 2006
By J. Wass (Oxford, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Top quality machine, gives excellent sound recordings and can be operated by the remote microphone. Nice clear screen, solid build.
TIP: NOWHERE in the manual does it tell you how to turn it off! To do so, make sure the unit is not playing and turn on the hold switch. This will turn off the unit. When playing/recording, the hold button works as normal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Device., 19 Nov 2006
I have had one of these for over four years now and I've never had a single problem with it. It's excellent.

Using the in-built microphone - or the clip-on mic, you can record for over 8 hours.

This setting will normally be good enough for anything you require. At this setting, the DM-20 records the file as a Windows Media Audio file and the file will playback at a rate of 32kbits per second.

However, should you require it, you can also record in true stereo! To do this though, requires you to purchase a stereo microphone which you can then plug into the mic socket on the device.
You can buy these inexpensively separately. As soon as you plug a stereo mic in, the system recognises it and will record at 64kbits per second and display the left and right audio levels whilst recording.

The DM-20 comes with a clip on microphone that you can plug into it. This allows you to attach the mic to your clothing or something like that, so you can walk around freely whilst dictating.
Also on the same lead is a remote control. However, 9 times out of 10, I just use the internal microphone built into the machine.

If you do decide to record in any of the lesser two quality settings (SP or LP), the file is recorded as a 'DSS' type file. To play this type of file requires software that recognises that compressed file type. That software comes with the machine and you can also download it for free.

I never record in anything less than 'HQ' and I'm sure you wouldn't either. Dictation/recording space is rarely a problem on the DM-20 even though it only has 128 mb of internal flash memory.
The unit will always keep some space free for voice recording - even if you fill it up with music tracks. The DM-20 can hold about 2 albums of music (not a great deal) - but this really is a just a bonus feature, the nuts and bolts of this machine is the quality of its recording.

You can switch between high sensitivity and low sensitivity (thereby cutting down on background sound in a noisy environment). There is a voice activated setting too (the sensitivity of which can be precisely calibrated) - put it by your bed and see if you snore!!
There is also an external speaker on the DM-20. Again, this is another bonus and something that I really like.

Finally, I think the build quality is excellent. A lovely looking device finished in brushed metal.

It takes two standard AAA batteries.
It all comes in a great carry-case which holds the unit, the clip on microphone and a spare set of batteries.

A great device.

This is a nice bit of kit, but sadly, not Vista compatible. Olympus say software will soon be released.....but that was Jan 2007!
