4.0 out of 5 stars Sexy camera 27 Jan 2005
I have the US branded version of this camera - the Olympus Stylus Verve. It's the same camera, just a different name. Canon cameras do it too, calling their Ixus an Elf in the US for some reason.

Anyway, I have no reservation in saying this is a very sexy camera. It's positively tiny for the functionality it offers - I can hold it in the palm of my hand and even touch my thumb and forefinger together around it.

Despite the small size it has a proper 2xoptical zoom, and weather proofing including a cap that snaps over the lens when not in use. What sets it apart from the competitors is that it has a very shapely curves rather than the traditional lumpy / oblong boxiness in the Ixus for example making it very easy to carry in the pocket. Thus even if you have a larger, more conventional camera, this little baby makes a fine backup especially where you don't want to drag something else around with you all night.

I don't believe it excels in anything particular, but the picture quality is good, the LCD screen is large and bright and the camera offers some extra goodies like being able to take video clips. It even offers modes for taking pictures in certain conditions such as indoors, at night, on a beach, behind glass and so on. It also has 4 picture quality modes to squeeze as many snaps as possible from the available memory. I'd say that the default HQ quality is adequate for 6x4 and 7x5 prints.

An oddity is that there is no view finder. You *have* to use the LCD, but the screen is bright and large so this is no great issue. Given the small size the battery is also non-standard, to fit the form factor but it is rechargable (and there is a recharger), however you must remove the battery to recharge it since there is no dock....

One criticism I have is that the included 16Mb card is pretty stingy. I'd expect a digital camera to offer out of the box the same number of shots as a 36mm camera, however you'd be lucky to get 15 on the memory supplied without slashing the quality. So I bought a 512Mb card which is enough for 512 shots as HQ quality or 128 shots at Super HQ or 22 minutes of video. I don't think I'll run out of space any time soon!

Anyway, this is a great camera. I haven't had any problems with it and the form factor certainly makes it one of the most handy and immediate cameras you're likely to find. Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the novice! 19 Dec 2004
After owning several Olympus cameras I decided to buy this one in crystal blue, with a 256MB card. I read a serious digital camera test where it came out on top, and after using it for 10 days or so I totally agree with the verdict.
It is my honest belief that you can not do better in this price range. Sure, there are cameras with more pixels, more zoom and tons of features in smaller packages, but not to this price.

This camera takes excellent pictures; great colour, dynamics and sharpness. It is easy to operate, has an ok battery time and is somewhat weather and shock resistant.

It covers all my camera needs. If I have to find something wrong with it, it has to be that there is no viewfinder.. You have to use the 1.8" screen. I recommend this camera to less advanced users, like myself, and I doubt anyone will be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best digital I've owned. 29 Mar 2005
I've tried a few different digital cameras and this one is definitely the easiest to use for both photos and movies. The quality of both are fantastic. What makes it extra special for me is that it fits in my pocket and I can take it anywhere so never miss a photo oppurtunity. My son has taken it to gigs and come back with good quality movies complete with good quality sound despite being in the middle of a crowd. You do need to invest in a bigger memory card but it is well worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW 8 May 2005
By D. DODD
Well what can i say, this camera is simply the BEST. I spent a lot of time looking into what camera would suit my needs the best, and i have to say i found it in this.
The size and colour is great, the picture quality is better than i ever imagined. It is really really easy to use and lightweight, i never leave the house without it. I did purchase a larger memory card which i would recomend and a nice blue case. you can even do a video recording its just great. Go and buy one now !!!!
This is also the cheapest you will find it. Treat yourself

This is so easy to use and looks so stylish too. It is weather proof and quite tough. I bought the Olympus case but hardly ever use it, as it is always out, ready. Produces great quality photos. Great battery life. Invest in a big memory card to fit all your holiday snaps on!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed 22 Feb 2007
By sdc
Sometimes it doesn't turn on and produces a horrible beeping noise.
XD Cards are expensive, not worth it. Battery doesn't last that long.
