The Olympus µ-7040: A small camera with big ideas

Stylishly chic yet fitted with an incredible 7x wide optical zoom (28-196mm*), that’s the dual appeal of the new 14 megapixel µ-7040 pocket camera from Olympus. Also impressive is the camera’s internal memory, which at an incredible 2GB provides the ability to shoot high volumes of still photos and High Definition (HD) video out of the box, replaying them on your HD TV set thanks to the camera’s HDMI connectivity. Internal memory can be further expanded with an optional SD card.

One of the world’s smallest zoom power packages, comfortably slipping into a cocktail bag or a jacket pocket, the heavy hitting Olympus µ-7040 is equally adept at delivering stunning group portraits and landscape shots as it is at bringing faraway detail closer.

It also sportingly features the latest innovative and user-friendly Olympus technologies today’s photographers demand. These include Photo Surfing, which quickly locates pictures tagged by event, location or person utilising the camera’s built in Advanced Face Detection and GPS. Also on board as standard are Dual Image Stabilisation, iAuto (intelligent Auto), AF tracking, Beauty Mode, In-Camera Panorama, plus the further creative assistance of Magic Filters.

HD movie recording and HDMI interface
Newly added to this enticingly slender contender is the ability to film High Definition video in 16:9 widescreen ratio and play footage back in the comfort of your living room on an HD TV set via the µ-7040’s HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) connection. The large 2GB internal memory, expandable via SD card slot also ensures that would-be Kubricks and Soderberghs won’t run out of storage capacity in a hurry.

Quick Photo Surfing thanks to innovative software
Flip through action-packed images on the spot with Photo Surfing. Thanks to newly built-in photo organizing and browsing software, photographers can quickly locate chosen events, people and locations tagged using GPS, Face Detection or the date they were taken. Pictures can then be viewed on a TV, PC or of course via the camera’s built-in LCD screen.

User friendly features
The new improved Scroll Dial control, as the name suggests, allows you to scroll through your images quickly and easily with the tip of your finger - no need for repeated button pushing to view your captured images. The Key Backlight Button illuminates key camera controls to help shooting in low light conditions when the keys might be hard to see. USB Battery Charging: Connect the camera to a computer and let the battery charge while you save and organise your images. The supplied super-compact AC adaptor also makes it easy to charge the battery while you're travelling.

Viewing your resulting masterpieces is easy thanks to the versatile and larger than average 7.6cm/3.0” HyperCrystal II LCD with 230k dot resolution.

Magic Filters: turn the everyday into the extraordinary
Specifically designed to expand the creative potential of digital photography, this impressive function of the µ-7040 utilises in-camera image processing technology to effortlessly transform the everyday into extraordinary scenes. Simple to operate, the filters allow users to create entirely new worlds with their images. What's more, they can be previewed before they are shot courtesy of the “Compare Shot” function. From vibrant colours and pencil drawings to mysterious or rounded perspectives, artistic spirits can magically turn ideas into reality.
Pop Art: In the tradition of Andy Warhol, this effect enhances colours, making them stronger and more vivid. It creates high-impact pictures that express the happy, light-hearted feeling of the pop art style.
Fish-Eye: With its distorted 180-degree perspective, this filter reproduces the dramatic effect of a fish-eye lens. It lends a new perspective to the whole scene with a “round” effect.
Sketch: This filter gives the impression that subjects have been sketched on the fly by an artist just at the moment that inspiration struck. Images are transformed into line drawings for improvised, creative results.
Pin Hole: For an ethereal feel, Pin Hole reduces the peripheral brightness of images like an image seen through a pinhole. Added to this is a unique colour tone that results in a style that has an air of secrecy or portrays the feeling of being lost in another dimension or space.

Advanced Face Detection Technology searches for faces in a composition and recognises them as the main subject. It then automatically puts them in focus and optimally adjusts exposure to create an image that’s sharp in the right places and ideally exposed. Advanced Face Detection Technology can detect up to 16 faces.

Also on board the µ-7040 is AF tracking, this system tracks the moving subject automatically and keeps it continually in focus for pictures that are optimally focused and exposed. It also memorises subject data even when the subject goes out of frame and resumes tracking when it reappears.

Providing belt and braces protection against image blur caused by camera shake or fast moving subjects, the µ-7040’s Dual Image Stabilisation function is a combination of Optical Image Stabilisation using a built-in gyro sensor and microprocessor detects camera movement and adjusts the CCD accordingly, and Digital Image Stabilisation where the camera automatically increases ISO sensitivity to allow shorter shutter speeds.

So you can concentrate on your subject rather than the camera’s settings, the µ-7040 also boasts the clever i-Auto (intelligent-Auto) mode. This uses advanced automatic detection technology to allow the camera to recognise five commonly photographed scenes automatically and adjust its settings accordingly for perfect exposures without the need for manual settings.

What’s more, you never need to worry about looking your best thanks to the smart µ-7040’s Beauty Mode. This feature improves the appearance of the subject while the shot is being taken, automatically enhancing skin on the face and adjacent areas so it appears smoother, brighter and more youthful.

In-Camera Panorama mode mode with on-screen guide is also included for particularly expansive shots of approximately 130° in the great outdoors or artistic fun in the city.
