Book Description

2 Feb 2012 MacMillan Poetry
THE REAL BATTLE - Roger Stevens. On the school field Or in the Olympic Stadium Your competitors smile While plotting to beat you But the real battle Is in your head. There are poems about winning, and about taking part; poems about having all the right kit, but no talent; poems that show that it if you are at school being the best egg and spoon racer really is as important to your mum and dad as being an Olympic athlete; poems about being a team player and poems about being an individual hero. In fact, this book is packed with sporting gems of all kinds.

4.0 out of 5 stars Olympic Poems in Performance 3 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
These poems are full of rapid rhythm and powerful rhyme so make a great choice for Choral Speaking /Performance Poetry activities. Poetry Marathon deserves special mention; when read together, the four sections provide a witty take on this epic race. Children love the concept and Stevens & Moses have ensured there is lots to discuss by littering the poem with language devices that KS2-4 children in particular should be familiar with. 'When poems get puffed they take a break, sometimes sit down at the side of the page.' I used 'Tennis Match' for a duet entry in a local choral speaking competition. The two voices brought the poem to life, with shared lines that mimicked the sound of the ball: 'Thwack,' Thwock,' 'Thwick!' It was a gold medal performance.
I thoroughly recommend this collection of poems, which are a fine and fitting way to remember Britain's 2012 Summer Olympics

This is a fun book with a huge variety of poems. Although a children's book, it is fun for adults to read too.
