Book Description

10 May 2012

From the bestselling author of A Rural Affair and A Crowded Marriage comes Catherine Alliott's brilliantly warm and funny take on taking control of your life, in Olivia's Luck.

'I don't care what colour you paint the sodding hall. I'm leaving.'

When her husband Johnny suddenly walks out on ten years of marriage, their ten-year-old daughter and the crumbling house they're up to their eyeballs renovating, Olivia is at first totally devastated. How could he? How could she not have noticed his unhappiness?

But she's not one to weep for long.

Not when she's got three builders camped in her back garden, a neighbour with a never-ending supply of cast-off men she thinks Olivia would be drawn to and a daughter with her own firm views on . . . well, just about everything.

Will Johnny ever come back? And if he doesn't, will Olivia's luck ever change for the better?

Step into Alliott country with Olivia's Luck.

More About the Author

'People often ask me if I always had a burning desire to be an author, and the honest answer is no, in fact it almost happened by accident.

I was working as a copy-writer in an ad agency and tired of writing blurb for soap powder, began writing a novel under the desk. I had no thought of publication, was just doing it to relieve the boredom, but I must say it was a bit of a shock when my boss walked in one day and said we're not sure you're entirely committed and gave me the sack!

Actually I think that galvanized me and I was determined to finish it. I did, but it took a while: I was working freelance, and then pregnant with my first child so it wasn't at the forefront of my mind. When my son was born I discovered babies slept for great chunks of the day, so I revisited it, tapping it onto a computer my brother gave me. (The first draft was in long hand, I'm a complete Luddite by nature, and actually, still write my first draft into note books.)

My husband persuaded me to send it to an agent who took it - amazingly and then a few weeks later I had a publisher too. The Old Girl Network came out about a year later and the first time I saw it in a shop, I was so startled I ran out again! I'm convinced it was easier back then to get published, these days it's far more competitive because there are so many girls doing it I'm glad I started early!

I've written a few more since then, but some things don't change: I still get a thrill when I see them around. I hope you enjoy the books, I certainly have a lot of fun writing them.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty, intelligent writing 25 Jun 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I love Catherine Alliott's books and this was no exception. The aspect I like most is the way you get to hear what the main character is thinking, since they're written in the first person, and those thoughts are very easily identified with. They're often wittily written and I've so often been heard suddenly laughing at something the girl is thinking, that my husband has decided he'll need to try one of Alliott's books! A few interesting twists in this one and, as usual, you're kept guessing as to how it will end. Most enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good characters 3 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I have many of Catherine Alliott's books and enjoy them. But I struggled to get to the end of this. It began well but, for me, it then seemed to drag through the middle until it picked up again. Could be a book that's better on a second reading but on this first read I felt it wasn't as good as the others I've got. Usual interesting characters though and neatly tied up ends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written but not my fave CA book 17 Oct 2013
Format:Paperback
I have read mostly all of CA's books, i think this is probably my least fave so far ... i was good but i found the builders all very irritating and when they came into a scene found myself getting bored. i liked the twist with the husband though... not saying i didn't enjoy this (still given it 4 stars) just the builders spoiled it for me!!!

Aways a good read from Catherine Alliot and this is no exception. If you want a well written but not too taxing story this will do nicely.

Have just 'found' this author and after reading my first two books, am addicted to her style of writing, humour and storylines. I found that I couldn't put any of Catherine Alliott's books down so far, which to me, is the sign of a good author. If you want a good read that takes you through a variety of emotions, I would recommend Olivia's Luck
