An adaptation Dickens would love 6 Dec 2012
By Paul A. Mastin - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Radio theater may be a lost or dying art, but don't tell the folks at Focus on the Family. They have produced some great programs over the years, including the long-running Adventures in Odyssey and the fantastic Chronicles of Narnia adaptation. They have outdone themselves with this new adaptation of Charles Dickens's classic Oliver Twist.

With a wide-ranging, talented British cast, the voices are convincingly right out of 19th century London. The sound effects and music add dramatic tension and draw the story along. Although it's only about 5 1/2 hours long, this production captures the essence of the book. I haven't done a line-by-line comparison, but my assumption is that much of the text and dialogue are Dickens's own words.

By updating this classic tale, while remaining true to the source, the Focus on the Family team has provided a terrific springboard for some moral and spiritual lessons. In spite of great temptation and the threat of mistreatment, Oliver knows right from wrong and demonstrates the difficulty of making moral choices under duress. The characters remind us repeatedly that we are not imprisoned by our past, whether choices or circumstances, and the redemption is available.

A radio or TV program is never a substitute for an original work of literature, but this audio program will enhance your family's enjoyment of Dickens's story. Some listeners might have a bit of difficulty with the accents and occasional archaic language, but most children will be drawn into Oliver's world. Thanks to Focus on the Family for this well-done, accessible production which beautifully captures the moral lessons and compelling story of Oliver Twist.

One more reason to like this: Focus on the Family is using proceeds from the sale of this audio program to fund its "Wait No More" adoption program. Included with the audio CDs is a DVD with the documentary, "Modern Day Oliver," which focuses on children in foster care and adoption.

Thanks to the Tyndale Blog Network for the complimentary copy of this terrific program!

Oliver Twist- Focus on the Family Radio Theater 2 Jan 2013
By Rebecca L. Stewart - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The plight of those less fortunate has always been at the forefront of community issues. What to do with them, how to help, the ignorance of such injustices and the facade of assistance all surface as one contemplates social matters. It was in this vein that Charles Dickens created Oliver Twist.

While a masterpiece, I had never read Oliver Twist although I knew the basic premise so when Tyndale offered the Focus on the Family Radio Theater version, I jumped at the opportunity. I was not disappointed.

Oliver's story is told with such finesse that as it twists and turns, weaving its way through each life represented it leaves one waiting for what comes next. The characters we distinct in their portrayal, sound effects good, each playing their part to draw the listener into the English countryside to get a glimpse of Oliver and his companions.

Focus on the Family has done an incredible job retelling this classic story. My family and I were riveted throughout all five discs, anxiously anticipating our next car ride so we could engage once more in the story. It was easy to follow and our imaginations roared to life, transporting us back to another time and place. I highly recommend it for families young and old, whether or not you've read the story!

audiobook review 12 Dec 2012
By Jonathan Esterman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This audio drama is over five and a half hours long, part of an award-winning radio theatre series by Focus on the Family, with a full cast, cinema sound, and original music score. From the Dickens classic, this feature is designed for a new generation with an authentic feel.

Following the life of Oliver Twist, born into a rough world, the audiobook opens with the death of Twist's mother. As a result, Twist was placed into an orphanage. His continual hope in the best, despite his tragic beginning and life of oppression, is what gives hope to listeners, trusting in compassion and redemption in the face of corruption. Taking place in 19th century England, Focus on the Family has brought the old back to life to reach out again.

The narration is a typical radio theatre, full on cast performance and musical score, but in this instance, quite lacking in the sound effects. The audio receives high marks for a well-endeavored path for this classic tale, but falls short on quality. This audio really cannot be considered an audiobook, but rather an audio performance. In the world of audio books, it would reign tall, but in the realm of performances, it is par for the course.

Those who enjoy Dickens or traditional audiobooks will find this option refreshing, but it definitely is not a seat-gripping adventure to pass the time with.
