At least we now have a DVD release of the music lovers so maybe we can start to see some of the Ken Russell films released. We desparately need a full box set of the Russell early work but it is all so expensive, even the videos. Glad i bought the main ones at the time. The import version of the Devils seems to be uncut but very poor in transfer quality. There was a version under the Maverick Directors series years ago but this has since disappeared and it was only the cut cinema version.

Thanks for that, i agree, but for such a classic film to be in limbo for so long smacks of something a bit sinister to me on Warners behalf. Although it's funny how this films still a hot potato after all this time is a credit to Russell/Reed et all.

Apparently Warners came up with a release date and artwork a couple of years ago, seemingly however they had 2nd thoughts and withdrew the release within days of its announcement. Channel 4's last screening was followed by a documentary featuring the recently re-discovered "Rape of Christ" scene which was cut at the time of it's original release. I understand this purely symbolic scene was removed only because the film was over running and not due to any censorship issue. Perhaps Warners worry that releasing the film with the newly restored missing footage may cause outrage amongst some religious groups while releasing it without the new footage on the other hand will upset some film buffs! This is a great pity as I know many Russell fans would dearly love to have a decent copy of The Devils in their collection. I'm sure eventually one day this film will be released, so it might as well be now!

Thats interesting that it was already to go and then at the eleventh hour...nothing. It kind of re-enforces my point. Spending the all that money and just tormenting everyone by pulling it. Warners know they'll make alot of money when they finally do decide to release it so they're not bothered either way. I hope they include the tagline 'Now includes the Rape of Christ' on the cover, well you never know.

"I understand this purely symbolic scene was removed only because the film was over running and not due to any censorship issue." Nope, the scene was removed before the film was submitted to the BBFC because it was feared that, with the scene included, the entire film would be banned.

Theres so many interesting stories about the film, which is even more reason to release it. Personally I thought the nun enema scene more disturbing than most of the others.

R.I.P Ken shame you never got to see it released in all it's glory. Just heard on BBC Breakfast the BFI's going to release the most complete cut ever next year. Fingers crossed.
