My eldest son and I were big fans of the Oliver Moon books and now, with his little brother beginning to want to branch out into short chapter books, I have turned to them again. What a hit they've been! Once again, I needed chapter books that weren't too difficult to read and that were easy for a little one to understand and these definitely hit the spot.
Oliver Moon is a young wizard at Magic School and the books are all about the magical mayhem and mischief that he, and his family, seem to routinely get up to. In this book Oliver is extremely disappointed to have landed the role of the smelly old troll, instead of a hero, in the school production. Still, he does his research and gives it his best shot...and ends up a hero after all!
These books are full of lovely humour that five years plus can easily understand and appreciate, and have lovely, short chapters that are brilliant for giving a real sense of accomplishment to a reader who's embarking on "proper" books for the first time. The Oliver Moon series is also great for slightly older children, (up to perhaps around 8 years old), who fancy a quick read and a bit of a giggle. I love the way that the scrapes that Oliver gets into are often problems that children could well face in real life at school, (albeit without the magic perhaps!), so kids can really identify with him. Fantastic!!
