Product Description

Terry is a handsome young man who has a secret: he is sexually attracted to much older men. He lives a closeted life in northern England, flying several times a year to the holiday island of Gran Canaria to indulge his unconventional passion. But on one of these trips he meets Alan Reid, the father of his ex-girlfriend – a man he’s always secretly desired. Alan and his best friend George Hope seem determined to grow old disgracefully amid the sun, sex and booze of the Canaries. Can this chance meeting lead to lasting happiness – or will it just be another holiday fling? Rich, bitter-sweet and sexy, Older Younger explores the nature of attraction between the generations, in the vibrant and colourful gay scene of Playa Del Ingles.

About the Author

Michael John was inspired to write "Older, Younger" after reading classics of the 1960s and '70s hedonistic gay scene, such as "Dancer From The Dance" by Andrew Holleran, "Faggots" by Larry Kramer and "City of Night" by John Rechy. In preparation for writing the book he conducted extensive field research in Playa Del Ingles, Benidorm, Berlin, Sitges and New York. The fact that the novel was ever actually written, despite the numerous temptations of the bars, beaches, saunas and "experimentation chambers" of these places, is a tribute to his resilience and self-discipline. A sequel to "Older, Younger" is planned, although at the moment the author is concentrating on science fiction. Michael John has also worked as a farm hand, a forklift truck driver, and a freelance gimp. He is 42 and lives in London.

More About the Author

Michael John wrote "Older, Younger" because very little had been written about the world of gerontophiles - people who are attracted to those much older than themselves. After experiencing the mixed-aged gay scene of Gran Canaria in the late 1990s, he set about creating the novel - which was his first and took many years to write. A sequel to "Older, Younger" is planned, which has the working title "The Death of Alan Reid". John has also contributed to the anthology, "Transitions", published by Pavement Pounders in association with the Dragon Cafe's Mental Fight Club - a community arts project in south London. His short story, "Papier Mache Friend", appears in "Transitions 3, a Journal of Crossings", published in March 2014. John is 43 and lives in Greenwich, south London, with an older man and a cat.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating read 21 Feb 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
'I thought you were smiling at someone behind me'... so begins "Older, Younger". As I have grown older I've come to know this situation, and the thrill and uncertainty of where it can lead. I was hooked into this story line from the start. As I read further I became equally fascinated by the ways in which Michael John has explored different aspects of relationships between older and younger men. Interspersed with familiar patterns of behaviour are situations which reflect the enormous diversity of gay male relationships and attitudes. The setting in Gran Canaria is an ideal backdrop against which the various threads are followed through; sometimes familiar, often surprising, now and then even historical. A thoroughly engaging, unusual and enlightening novel. It's well written, and I can recommend it to both gay and straight readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read. 6 April 2013
By Yumbo
Format:Kindle Edition
This novel sets out to show that some younger men are genuinely attracted to older men. The attraction isn't money or some deep longing for a father figure; they just find older men more physically attractive. It's a nice antidote to a world which puts great store on youth and beauty. But the novel goes further than that and highlights the bonds of friendship that exist between gay men who are not sexually involved with each other. The writing is superb and there's a warmth in the characterisation and relationship development. This book doesn't sneer at relationships between generations, it unapologetically celebrates it. It is a good read.

3.0 out of 5 stars If only! 3 Dec 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As I was about to head to Gran Canaria and knew the island quite well I bought the book. It's kind of "ok" but full of wishful thinking perhaps? The idea of a bar full of guys 60 plus is believable but the queue of stunning 18 year old waiting to meet them is not. Having been in "Hummell Hummell" you can rest assured it's not full of young lads who want to meet pensioners and have no other interest other than their beauty so it left me cold. I'm really sorry to say this and I did enjoy the descriptions around Playa De Ingles but that's about it!

5.0 out of 5 stars An eye opener 12 May 2013
By Birch
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
While some passages of this book are real eye openers (sometimes eye watering), I never really thought of it as a gay novel. It's a lovingly written, very human novel, featuring gay characters. True, the characters inhabit a world, at least while on holiday, that will be alien to many, but their stories are very real and well told. My favourite passage comes towards the end when Terry contemplates his future with the older men he's attracted to, a fleeting glance at the cruel of the passing of time.

Now, where did I put that bathtub?

Wonderful easy read about the thoughts of a gay older man, pursued by a younger man. Very well written, with a great insight into what it's like to be older and gay in this day and age.
