Wonderful... 1 May 2010
Format:Audio CD
I've been lucky enough to get an advance copy of this recording from the States. This is a real return to form for the Emersons after their recent disappointing Janacek disc. There is nothing 'slack' about these performances - in fact they are very tight and focused. The Emersons are one of the worlds great ensembles and they really give these works the 'treatment'!

Apart from the 'American' Quartet, the other Dvorak Quartets are very under-rated. To be sure, they contain wonderful and original music with glorious melodies that are a joy to the ear. If only they were performed more often then the String quartet repertoire would be much richer.

These discs are simply superb and deserved to be heard by a wide public who, if they are only familiar with the aforementioned 'American' Quartet are in for a treat.

Do not hesitate.

The Emersons: technique and expression; Dvorák: art of the first water... 28 April 2010

The Emersons: technique and expression; Dvorák: art of the first water...
.
The Emersons' trademark technical perfection is now fully wed to a ripened mellow expressive method apropos to an active circle of ensembles of the highest artistry and recorded repertoire (which includes the Leipzig and Prazák Quartets).

The Emersons seem to have a real dedication to this music--a commitment immediately palpable in their interpretations.

Writing in the 1970s, Malcolm MacDonald in his book on Schönberg rightly reminds us that `Dvorák's quartets (even now much undervalued) were among the most vital contributions to the genre in the later nineteenth century'.

The Emersons revitalize Dvorák's vibrant art.

The Eb-major Quartet (B.92), for example, has much to offer (as do all the works here) in terms of ecstatic melodies, interesting harmonic key changes, and curious quartet sonics (e.g., pizzicato, glissando, perdendosi, etc.): the Allegro, Dumka, Romanza, and Finale are all one could ask for in the quartet medium: it's virtually a perfect package.

Dvorák's range of expression--his enthusiastic development of motifs, application of colour, and apprehension of textures--attains the summa cum laude of chamber music, while the Emersons realize this with the highest artistic process.

Along with the magnificent two last Quartets (B.192-93), on offer here is a scrumptious reading of the `American' String Quintet (B.180), mate to the wondrous and understandably popular `American' Quartet (B.179).

The `American' Quintet is of course in the Entartete [`Degenerate'] (a reminder of this infamous critique) vein with suggestions of African and native American rhythms and scales.

Dvorák's third Quintet is with additional viola--(as opposed to his second Quintet [B.49] with double bass).

Enthusiasts need not hesitate in obtaining this immensely gratifying set.

The Popularity of That One Old Warhorse ... 25 Feb 2011
By Customer Formerly Known as Giordano Bruno - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
... that "New World Symphony" played obligatorily thrice a day on every 'classical music' radio station and by every pops orchestra on the bandshells of America, is probably the greatest obstacle to audience appreciation of the musical merits of Czech Composer Antonin Dvorak. There's also the familiar "New World" string quartet to overcome, in order to approach and appreciate Dvorak. And now the 'marketing' boys of DGG have compounded the problem by entitling this three-CD performance "Old World - New World"! Oy! Ignore the title!

This package includes four of Dvorak's last five quartets, numbers 10, 11, 13 & 14! It's the missing number 12 that Dvorak composed in Iowa and which supposedly reflects his appreciation of American folk music, thought it sounds mighty Czech to my ears. A month after the American Quartet, Dvorak composed his second Quintet Opus 97 for strings (with a second viola), in somewhat the same vein as the famous quartet but considerably richer in counterpoint and thematic complexity. I'd venture to say that it's one of the most under-appreciated masterworks of the repertoire; if you choose to listen for its 'American' elements, go right ahead, but listen you should! It's performed on the 2nd CD of this set, along with "Cypresses", an unusual suite of 12 impressionistic miniatures for string quartet. If these little pieces sound song-like to you, your ears are perceptive; the suite is a reworking of songs Dvorak had composed in his earliest career. Dvorak spent only three years in the United States, almost entirely in in New York, and there's nothing notably New-Worldish about the vast bulk of his compositions.Honestly, all of Dvorak's quartets are under-appreciated. The four quartets performed here are major accomplishments. Take note that Dvorak stands almost exactly half-way between Beethoven and Shostakovich! If you listened to the 14th quartets of all three, you would not, I suggest, find Dvorak out of his depth.

And the Emerson String Quartet is unsurpassed. What else is there to say?
