Review

" Rylant and Brown together create with affection and lovingly humorous touches a glimpse of old age lived with relish." -Booklist

Product Description

How does an old woman who has outlived all her friends keep from being lonely? By naming the things in her life she knows she will never outlive--like her house, Franklin, and her bed, Roxanne. When a shy brown puppy appears at her front gate, the old woman won t name it, because it might not outlive her. Tender watercolours capture the charm of this heart-warming story of an old woman who doesn t know she s lonely until she meets a plucky puppy who needs a name--and someone to love.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful look at the risks of loving., 10 Mar 1999
By A Customer
Cynthia Rylant succeeds in convincing readers young and old that we take risks when we love, but that the rewards are worth it. The old woman's dog was "Lucky", and so is anyone who reads this book to a child.

This book is the one that I never tire of reading to my four year old son. He would have me read it over and over again, all day if I would. The book makes us smile every time we read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and touching for both children and adults, 2 Dec 1998
By A Customer
This is one of my all-time favorite children's books by a wonderfully-talented author. My children, ages 4 and 6, enjoy reading it again and again as much as I do. It's wonderful to find a book that combines beautiful writing, a great plot, illustrations that enhance the story AND an important moral. This book would be a great choice for a Christmas gift.
