'Impeccably written, it is a very British book, with country houses in the Cotswolds and well-behaved intelligentsia as the characters.'TANGLED WEB

Product Description

When David Audley, that most subtle of Intelligence chiefs, sends his insubordinate protege Paul Mitchell off to investigate a KGB operation by researching a long-forgotten naval engagement off France in 1812, it doesn't look to Mitchell as if it will lead anywhere. But the fate of the crew of the Vengeful has more than a few surprises in store for Mitchell and suddenly the past throws a dazzling and very dangerous light on the present.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant - but perhaps not for everyone, 1 Nov 2011

I came across Anthony Price first with the Labyrinth Makers - being drawn to the book more by the Dakota on the cover than the fact that it had achieved a CWA Silver Dagger. At school I quite enjoyed History but was never very good at it - this book gives me some insight into the reasons why. History as detective work is far more engaging than simply learning lists of facts, and the historical unfolding in this book is a triumph in itself (even if much of it is imaginary)even without the element of subterfuge.

5.0 out of 5 stars I spy chess, 1 Mar 2004

This review is from: The Old Vengeful (Crime Masterworks) (Paperback)
This is a terrific read.A compelling and complex mystery where the events of the past impact upon the present.David Audley is one of the great characters of spy fiction. He is brilliant, arrogant and fallible. An intelligence grandmaster setting out his subordinates to coax the solution to him. Here the events of the past impact upon the present.Audley's protege Paul Mitchell has to find out exactly what happened then to find the solution now.
I cannot recommend this book, and all the books in this series, too highly.
