Product Description

First published over a century ago, this practical guide shows how to add traditional fences, gates, and bridges to your house, farm, or garden. Learn how to construct portable fences and hurdles, fences for streams and gullies, wickets, stiles, and other barriers and railings. More than 300 illustrations accompany straightforward instructions for installing stone, sod, board, picket, and other types of fences as well as hedges, posts, wooden and iron gates, and similar enclosures. In addition to its value as a manual, this volume is also a fine armchair book for enthusiasts of nostalgic Americana.

5.0 out of 5 stars Early American design history 8 April 2014

This is a "can't stop in 1 setting book". It reinvents my boring designs of fences in my property that I am thinking of changing. Now I have fresh vision. And it also reflects on the early American settlement that was all about using the resources of wood diversity present everywhere.
5.0 out of 5 stars Old-Timer's wisdom & smarts 7 Oct 2014
By Rabid Reader - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is one of those precious books--something special for those of us who get a kick out of the little things in life. I bought it because I wanted to build a little bridge, but then read it all the way through, just because it was so fascinating.

We have all seen most of these daily-life structures, but little appreciated their sophistication or "structure for function" engineering.

I grew up in farm country, so maybe I'm just being nostalgic about it all, but I will keep this book on my shelf along with all my other construction books. Not the least because it's practical: good designs are always good, no matter how old or traditional.

This book is very informative and interesting. It brings the past history and knowledge of gates and fences and gives you the know how to build them.
