Highly readable and thorough, this book is truly unrivalled as an introduction to this section of the Old Testament and Apocrypha. It does not asssume any knowledge, but neither does it assume ignorance. It deals (unlike so many works of critical scholarship) with discussions of theological issues: I found the discussion of Job particularly stimulating. Although, on minor issues I occasionally disagreed with Crenshaw; I have no hesitation about saying that every student of the Bible should have this book on her or his bookshelf.
