Following stand-out performances on The Memory Band, Apron Strings and A Garland of Song Nancy Wallace finally breaks ranks for a truly wonderful solo debut. The greatest strength of this quietly beautiful album is the sense of soul. An intensely personal, intimate and yearning feeling pervades the whole album and wraps you like a warm blanket after a winter's walk. Without an extensive knowledge of folksong you would be hard pushed to distinguish between the traditional and modern compositions so seamlessly do they sit side by side.
Vocally the touchstones will be the beautiful cut glass clarity of Shirley Collins and Anne Briggs, the instrumentation delicately plucked guitars, banjos and fiddles, mournful, wheezing accordions - the perfect accompaniment to not detract from that astonishing voice. While many of today's female folk singers are insufferably twee Nancy Wallace possesses an integrity and strength of delivery that makes these tales of love, loss and dreaming totally disarming and immediately addictive.
I will be astonished if there is another LP this year quite as simply affecting as 'Old Stories'.

This is a really great album for people who love their music honest and inspiring. In previous projects' her sweet, warm voice always stood out to me- so i was excited to see what direction Nancy would take for her solo album. The combination of traditional folk songs and her own compositions is wonderfully knitted together, and feels comforting but not sickly sweet. There's a rawness in her voice and a starkness to these songs that's totally enchanting; this album is perfect for keeping out the wintry chill, or maybe making you smile whilst listening to it at the bus stop, which is generally what happens to me.

I came across this artist a few years back and have been lucky enough to see Nancy live in gigs across London. Her first EP "Young Hearts" was a joy but Old Stories is just wonderful. A melodic album sung by an artiste with a beautiful and unique voice which conjours up a dozen emotions and transports you into her world.
