While Wyatt's early albums featured lush arrangements and guest musicians, by the mid eighties he had consolidated into a one man production house, producing two albums with just himself playing keyboards, drums and vocals and both are fine pieces of work. Rottenhat is quite approachable with songs following short formats while retaining the air of experiment mixed with sincerity that Wyatt fans so love. Buy it.

As a fan of the following,

Robert Wyatt's original visions from the wonderful grupo SOFT MACHINE

Signore Wyatt's sense of humor

his decided progressive politics, and thoughtful worldview

his emotive voice

his exotic and crazylouco world view

(on different recordings) that he can sing in a good italian and spanish!

THis cd will not produce any sparks, it is quietly forceful, and even as Signore Wyatt uses drum machine and is at best a rudementary pianista, these compositions stand out for their beauty and for the words, which are very sly and cynical, in the tipical english way.

Recommended, as are ALL Robert Wyatt , from Soft Machine and Matching Mole grupos to the numerous solo efforts.

One cannot be disappointed when a músico makes a 5 star effort!

Another excellent record for Robert Wyatt. Personally I don't rate this one as high as Rock Bottom or Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard, but it is still essential. I'm pretty much going along through the Wyatt catalog chronologically and have yet to be disappointed.

Robert Wyatt is, and has always been, a great songwriter and a distinctive singer capable of deliverings lyrics with great humour, deep sadness, beauty, biting political irony... whatever is required. It's also a very affected voice which can annoy.
This album, recorded in 1985 and played entirely by himself, has all these qualities. But, for me, the lack of interplay between musicians, renders some of his great tunes more shallow than they deserve. Each track can sound somewhat similar and so nothing stands out - a real shame. But if you like other work by Robert Wyatt, you'll probaly still like this.
