Product Description

Review

''An elegiac love poem to the vanishing independent record shops in the United States and Britain [...] it expertly captures ''the madness that oozes'' out of a record store owner's skin.'' --New York Times

''An excellent new anthology of writing celebrating the independent record shop.'' --The Times

''Old Rare New's contributors are DJs, journalists and band members. They understand the magic and they know it can make the world a better place.'' --The Times

Synopsis

There is nothing quite like the feeling of thumbing through LP after LP in a dusty old record shop, only to stumble upon some hidden treasure, new obsession or forgotten love. "Old Rare New: The Independent Record Shop" is an homage to the holy places of music collecting, complete with their particular anecdotes, peculiar characters, and unique environments. Emma Pettit, formerly of the Institute of Contemporary Arts, has traveled across America into these eclectic spaces of musical exchange, interviewing record shop owners, collectors and musicians to provide a rich account of the increasingly rare independent record shop. The shops featured include: Other Music (New York), Aquarius Records (San Francisco), Amoeba Records (California) and Jazz Record Mart (Chicago).

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely to look at, but a great read too, 25 Sep 2008
By Victoria B (London, UK) - See all my reviews
I received this for my birthday, and was thrilled with it. The photos capture the atmosphere of record stores quite beautifully - and may possibly explain why I seem to keep finding myself in my local record shop at the moment!

It's not just a coffee table type book though - I thought the articles were engaging, and from an eclectic and impressive list of contributors.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really cool book, 24 Sep 2008
By Anne Hollis (Hertfordshire) - See all my reviews
A must for all those who have ever owned a record collection. Read this and you will regret selling your prized vinyl in the scout jumble sale or on e bay...and if you have given your Mammas and Pappas LP's to your offspring - get them back! The colour illustrations of record sleeves alone are enough to convince me I should have kept mine.
Evocative writing and a great selection of photos.
