Product Description

Review
Advertising executive Finnamore successfully brings wit and panache to this contemporary novel of manners. Set in San Francisco, it takes a long hard look at how people behave in the presence of an Impending Marriage. The blushing bride is the sassy Suzanne, the bridegroom-to-be is the older and previously married Michael, the epitome of A Nice Jewish Man. But of course, things can't all be a bed of roses - can they? Provocative and compelling, this lively novel avoids all the cliches, preferring a far healthier irony and wit. (Kirkus UK)

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, extremely well-written book with misleading title, 28 Jan 2001
By A Customer
I first read this book under the American title (Otherwise Engaged) in an all-night bookstore in Washington, DC. I picked it up while browsing and ended up standing there until I had finished it, frequently laughing out loud because it was so funny. The UK title has nothing to do with the book at all, and would really put me off reading it if I knew nothing about it. The main character, Eve, is a sarcastic, very intelligent woman who has just become engaged. It doesn't even matter if, like me, you're not terribly interested in the subject of marriage, because the book is extremely funny. She has all the modern misgivings about marriage and the requisite neuroses and hang-ups, while being extremely likeable and quirky. This details her pre-wedding year. There's a whole series of Neurotic Women in Their Thirties Who Want Relationships books out there, spearheaded by Bridget Jones and her diaries, and I've read a few of them, although the characters can annoyingly insecure. I think that BJ's Diary is also very funny and well-written, but I like the character of Eve more than Bridget because she's less of a caricature and less insecure. However, it's probably a bit unfair to compare the books, because they're quite different in that BJ's Diary is very over the top.

f you want to spend a night curled up with a very funny, sarcastic, light-hearted and essentially good-natured novel with some serious and interesting tangents, pick up this one. I give it 5 stars for humor.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!, 19 Sep 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Old Maid (Paperback)
Every intelligent heterosexual woman needs to read this book because it says almost everything about women and their feelings about men, wanting to be married, being in love, marriage, friendship, family, work... and lots more -- without being boring, predictable or pretentious. Finnamore manages to pack in so many everyday thoughts and fears -- she has managed to write a truly honest diary of the woman's mind. I would say she is a modern day Virginnia Woolf -- though you may miss this as you find yourself gigling at the many humourous comments scattered throughout the book. I can't praise this book enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars A delight!
What a sassy, bitchy, bold and true novel this is; I adored every single page and read many of them twice. I bet Bridget's reading it and loving it.
