Book Description

12 Feb 2009
How do you show off the best features of a home built for another age, while adapting it for modern living? In "Old House New Home", Ros Byam Shaw looks at the many different ways we can furnish and arrange an old building to suit today's needs, whether it is a terraced townhouse or a converted factory. Exploring properties as diverse as a small Victorian townhouse and a former country dairy, she reveals how the design of each home has been reinvented for the 21st century. This book is divided into a series of key styles: 'Period Piece', 'Urban Chic', 'Rustic', 'Recycled Spaces' and 'Country House'.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real 'Ooh' book 6 Feb 2008
By Annie
Format:Hardcover
I love this book! Yes, a coffee table picture book, but packed full of inspirational homes that offer wonderful ideas for modern living in a period setting. When you read the text, you understand the love - and usually money - that has been lavished on these homes, and though most of us can't hope to compete with some of the grander schemes, there is so much that can be used on a smaller scale for our own design ideas. And we all need a dream! This is a wonderful book for anyone who loves old houses and conversions, and a real joy to have on the bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great ideas 18 Nov 2006
Format:Hardcover
This book truly is what it says on the cover. It isn't about mirroring a style, it is about adapting an older house to accommodate modern living in a sympathetic way. It gives great advice on sourcing furniture & fabrics to add to the feel of your period. Lots of great photographs and plenty of "ooo" moments.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Modern Country Style review 11 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
I love Ros Byam Shaw. Her writing is always readable, relevant and inspiring. This particular book claims to help you 'show off the best features of a home built for another age, while adapting it for modern living'.

The book is for the coffee table so consequently has lovely large pictures. Perfect for showing up details in the many gorgeous homes featured.

It is divided into five sections: Period Piece, Urban Chic, Rustic, Recycled Spaces and Country House. Each of these has between four and six houses featured, as well as features on 'Furniture and Lighting' and 'Fabric and Finishing Touches'. All features are excellent.

The areas picked out cover all aspects of Modern Country excellently - from the traditional cottage through to converted warehouses and penthouse luxury.

It is reeeeeally lovely but doesn't quite reach the exalted spot for me. Some of the houses featured are too grand to get any real inspiration from (antique kitchen, anybody?). Drooling, though?.....Oh yes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Heaven 9 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
My only criticism of this book is that it ended. It won't go into the tecchy detail of how to restore an old house. It's more about inspiring you to do it by showing readers a wonderful selection of places and photos. Love the fact it covers such a wide range of eras whilst keeping a running theme of good taste. It reminded me that anything is possible. Ros Shaw is one stylish author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasing 13 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
A good read and a bargain at £[]; the book covers a range of period properties all with different looks. The rustic section is a tad too long for my liking (front cover doesn't suggest this would be included). The commentary reads well with a friendly and personal tone.
Overall, an interesting approach to interior decor with some beautiful photography and ideas that would be easy to emulate in your own home.

Some really tasteful photos (in my opinion - rather a subjective area by definition!). Good for a little inspiration if making a few interior changes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Interior book 13 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
I've fallen in love with Ros Byam Shaw's books ever since I bought Living with Colour a few months ago. This book is about people who live in period homes and how they have adapted their lives and renovated these homes to make it liveable for themselves. The writing flows like a book, as do her other books, the photographs are beautiful, and there is plenty of inspiration if you are looking to create a similar look in your own home - but this is not a DIY book, these are stories about real people and how they live. A great coffee table book, a good reference book as well with a list of architects and designers at the back of the book, so if you do want an exact copy of a picture in the book, you can look up the designer and contact them. I found it very useful and inspirational.
