Book Description

5 Mar 2007 Radio Collection
This is the complete fifth series of the fiendishly funny comedy set in Hell, from "Drop the Dead Donkey" co-creator Andy Hamilton. 'One of the great comic creations of recent years' - "Sunday Telegraph". '...one of the best-written comedies around, sustained over its 12 years on the air by brilliant performances and production' - "Daily Telegraph". Poor Satan has to undergo yet more trials and tribulations in this fifth series of the Sony Award-winning comedy. What with missing the Professor, a case of Seasonal Affective Disorder, and above all, the disastrous overcrowding in Hell, he hasn't felt this depressed since Bill Clinton survived his heart operation. Levels of human sin are at their highest ever, and people are dying at an unprecedented rate. The check-in demons are overwhelmed, and Satan has to find a solution. He decides to launch a Crusade of Moral Rearmament, and infiltrates the worlds of religion, sport, politics and the media in an attempt to persuade people to behave better. Meanwhile, a new arrival is fomenting rebellion, aiming to overthrow Satan and take control of Hell...Andy Hamilton stars as Satan with Robert Duncan as Scumspawn, Jimmy Mulville as Thomas and Geoffrey Whitehead as Roland Kingworthy. A fiery furnace of brilliant one-liners and biting satire, "Old Harry's Game" is the insider's guide to Hell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Join Satan's moral crusade 26 Dec 2007
By Julie Cutler TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
The pits of hell are so overflowing with sinners that the timeshare salesmen are escaping and selling packages to demons. The check-in demons are so disgruntled that they've gone on strike. Even Satan's credibility is so low with living mortals that when he appears in full regalia, he gets mistaken for a member of "Fathers 4 Justice". The only way Satan can think to stem the tide of humanity pouring into hell is to convince world leaders to support a moral crusade- good luck with that one.

I only caught bits of the original series of OHG and I loved this later series (thankfully released in full). I didn't feel that there was anything missing from the comedy, just because the writing had to aim in a different direction. Don't be put off by the other lacklustre reviews.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good... in an understated way 22 Sep 2007
Format:Audio CD
I'm inclined to agree with the review below, although I would have been more in agreement if, like the reviewer, I'd based it on having listened to it solely on the radio. I enjoyed it, but wasn't too impressed with it, when it first came out on radio, but listening to it again, I can see a lot more to enjoy. Yes, the absence of James Grout as the Professor means the series lacks a lot of the focus it previously had, but it means, oddly that this series plays to the strenghths of writer / performer Andy Hamilton: satirical comedy.

The premise - that owing to mankind's depravity, hell is becoming too full for the demons to cope with the influx - is an interesting one, and Satan's response - to interact with the great and the good to get them to persuade us to change our ways - is amusing.

It isn't as good as previous series, which relied on the interplay between Satan and the Professor for their effect, but this is well worth a listen. It's good that this series only consists of four episodes, as I think that, if it had been stretched over the more usual six, it couldn't have sustained what momentum it has. If you like radio comedy, and your expectations aren't too high, then do give this a try.

If you're reading this you probably don't need any introduction to Old Harry's Game. You know all about Andy Hamilton's excellent portrayal of the Devil, cynical and twisted with a voice like Anthony Newly. You know about Scumspawn, his most revolting and fawning demon, played by Robert Duncan. You know this is a wickedly funny comedy.

In a change from the earlier series, the Professor has departed Hell (kudos to Hamilton here, it's not many writers who can write a character out when the series is set in the eternal afterlife!), and soes not feature in this series. His presence is sorely missed, as Satan no longer has a sounding board to argue with or show off to. As a result, some of the narrative driving force has been lost. To make up for this, Hamilton has Satan appearing in the world of man in various guises, trying to save mankind's souls and ensuring they go to heaven. It's a stroke of comedy genius and works well.

There is also a new character in Hell, someone who is so evil that even Thomas is impressed. Played with a stylish suavity by the ever reliable Geoffrey Whitehead, he is the highlight of this particular series.

There are four half hour episodes presented on two discs in a foldout jewel case. There are limited liner notes, which are basically the same interview with Hamilton that appears in volumes 1 and 2, and original air dates.

An absolute essential for any lover of witty satire.

4.0 out of 5 stars Old Harry's Game Series 5 30 Mar 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Old Harry's Game is one of the best radio comedies ever - my only reason for not giving series 5 all 5 stars is that there are only 2 x CD with running time 4 hours rather than the 3 x CD and 6 hours for the other series

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Brilliant 29 Jan 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Am slowly acquiring the entire series of Old Harry's Game, having caught odd episodes on the radio. If you haven't heard one of these shows I can't recommend them enough. Andy Hamilton's comic writing is superb and the cast is great. If you want a funny sideswipe at the notion of Satan and hell (and consequently life, people and the human condition) this will fit the bill nicely.

What more can be said. If your sense of humour is like Andy Hamilton's, then you'll love this series. Same concept as the earlier Old Harry's Game series, but always new angles and the mental visual imagary beats anything on TV.
