Product Description

Product Description

Danny Brown is a true rap original. His songs are as profane as they are profound, mixing heartfelt personal narratives and razor-sharp social commentary with hedonistic party beats and hysterical, pitch-black punchlines. His personal style is as unique as his music, an inspiration to high fashion designers and legions of devoted fans alike. Danny's Fool's Gold debut XXX was a free release that snowballed into the year's most critically-lauded rap album, landing the Detroit hero on the covers of The Fader, XXL and Wax Poetics, and follow-up single "Grown Up" was a viral video smash that brought Dannya mtvU Woodie Award and millions of YouTube views. Now, after two solid years of universal acclaim and non-stop touring around the globe, Danny jumps from "artist to watch" to undeniable icon with his magnum opus, Old. This emotionally-charged concept album is an intoxicating mix of Danny at his most experimental AND most accessible, balancing hip-hop grit with electronic club sonics and much, much more.Featuring guest appearances from A$AP Rocky, Schoolboy Q, Freddie Gibbs, Purity Ring, Charli XCX, and more over production from the likes of A-Trak and Rustie, Old is a psychedelic portrait of rap's most vital and exciting new star.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars, gotta round up to 5 14 Feb 2014
Format:Audio CD
Great hip-hop album. Found about Danny Brown like most people through the EXCELLENT mixtape XXX (the title being a reference to turning 30, the explicit content and the familiarity with drugs).

Old is a continuation of the themes started in XXX, growing up in the ghetto and witnessing plenty of the dark side of humanity when everyone is broke and addiction is rife. Danny still manages to make you smile and laugh while talking about some horrific stuff and there are the usual explicit stories thrown in.

It is not MTV Base ready music, there are no real chart hits here ("Dip" is great, being being a whole track about molly it's unlikely to get picked up for much airplay) - some of the production is jaw dropping, his flow and lyrics are great.

Buy this, download XXX for free and live in Danny's head for a bit, it's well worth it.

(While you're at it, grab "Devil's Heaven" by Dopehead from a mixtape site - is a member of the Bruiser Brigade crew that Danny pretty much heads up, another great album of dark lyrics and nice beats).

5.0 out of 5 stars Energetic and sometimes serious 4 Jan 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I am prone to despising Hip Hop songs revolving around sex and drugs but Danny Brown tackles the subject with such surreal energy that it really didn't bother me, the production fits perfectly with Dannys style whether he's doing his kinda high pitched insane voice flow or his serious real voice... the serious side is as enjoyable as the 'party' side and it makes for a eccentric mixture of pain and pleasure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Half Serious, Half Party, All Danny Brown 8 Oct 2013
By Eric Titus - Published on
Format:Audio CD
The album is half serious, half party. But throughout, Danny Brown flexes his lyrical talent and vocal variety.

Danny's greatest strengths throughout the album are his electronic beats, ear for interesting production, and the imagery he uses in his lyrics. The themes of his songs are sex, drugs, and rock and roll. And abuse, addiction, and losing touch. The album is dichotomous. Even when the lyrics drag, the beat makes up for it.

It's a worthwhile listen to anyone who likes hiphop, especially electronically infused or influenced. For those interested in serious themes, Side A is good. For those interested in party themes Side B. Overall, pretty solid release.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Don't want the "Old" Danny Brown. 12 Oct 2013
By Ray-Review - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Danny Brown, the greatest hip hop artist coming from Detroit since Eminem and J. Dilla (sorry Big Sean). I fell in love with Danny Browns music with his "XXX" album. Danny Brown knows how to humorize dark and depressing subject matter into entertaining music. What I love about Danny Brown is that he can change his voice into 2 distinct personalities 1) Being dark and serious 2) the crazy character when he deliberately raps in a higher pitch. "OLD" is the third album released by Danny Brown, but the first album to be released in retail stores. I can comfortably say OLD is easily one of the top 10 rap albums of 2013. The beats, flow and lyrics are diverse, enigmatic and just intriguing to listen to. Some of my favorite songs include the opening track "Side A (Old)", the experimental "Kush Coma" feat. A$AP Rocky, "Torture", the club banger "Smokin & Drinkin", "Break It (Go)", "Dope Fiend Rental" feat. ScHoolboy Q and "25 Bucks". The album is filled with 19 songs, but each song runs about 3 minutes or less on average. I particularly love the fact that Danny Brown is able to make music that is exciting and noticeably different from other hip hop artists as well as his previous catalog. No this is not "XXX", and no Danny Brown isn't the most gifted lyricist. But what Danny Brown does have is charisma, which is reminiscent of the legendary Wu-Tang clansman Ol' Dirty Bastard. The appeal that lies in Danny Brown as an artist is his character and his unique flow so without being said BUY OLD if you love Hip Hop. Yes its experimental, yes it isn't the easiest or most comprehensible album you will hear this year, but it is undeniably great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best rapper right now 9 Oct 2013
By Peter Andreadis - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Danny Brown is hands down my favorite rapper of the moment and has been since I got "XXX" a couple years back. I also saw him perform at the Pitchfork Music Festival and it didn't disappoint. I've always been a huge De La Soul fan and Brown reminds me of what I like about them: original, humorous, creative approach to making music, but not joking all the time. A perfect mix. Get this record and support a true artist of the genre!

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid 13 Nov 2013
By Thomas Frick - Published on
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have been a Danny Brown fan for a while now, but am sometimes put off by the misogyny in some of his lyrics. The first half of this album really appeals to me, with the side of Danny that I most prefer, containing songs with more serious subject matter and a greater range in his vocal approach. Most of the second half falls more in the category of club bangers, to me start to blend together after two or three of them. Overall, though, there's some pretty solid diversity present and it's a good showcase of the different sides of Danny Brown.

4.0 out of 5 stars Real recognition for Real Danny Brown 17 Oct 2013

Album feels like he went in the studio and did him pure and simple no gimmicks Slaughter House on there last album went in and went by a formula that Eminem has used to great success in the past but was a huge failure for them the album sounded artificial and boring but my dude Bruh Bruh just spilled his soul out on this album and that is rare these days.
