4.0 out of 5 stars good replacement for Harry Potter 6 Jun 2013
By Serendipity Reviews TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
Reviewed by Georgina Tranter on Serendipity Reviews

Oksa Pollock - The Last Hope is the first in a new adventure series of six books by two French authors. Already a success in Europe, the first book is being launched this summer, with a possible film to follow. Billed as something that will be enjoyed by fans of Harry Potter and Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, I thought I would give it a try.

I have to say, I was instantly drawn into this magical `other' world as Oksa and her family move between the real world, of life in London, to that of their mythical home, Edefia. It reminded me a little of the writings of Diana Wynne Jones, who I love. I don't want to give too much away here for fear of plot-spoiling, but it's a great read! It has all the ingredients to make it a successful set of books, (including a creepy teacher called Dr McGraw, who seems to know Oksa's powers before even she does), and hopefully if the publicity is right, it will do as well as the books it claims to be similar to. There is already a website set up to encourage readers to become Pollockmaniac's! If you have a teenager who is missing the Harry Potter series, I think this could well be a good replacement.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much magic 25 Jan 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The writer tries too hard on the magic invention side. There is too much of it which obscures the characters and loses the story. A little less fantasy and a bit more substance would have improved it greatly. I gave up a third of the way in.

2.0 out of 5 stars Harry Potter it is not... 14 Jan 2014
By Ms
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Firstly, as an adult, I am not the target audience for this, and secondly it is always difficult to know how many of the infelicities of a translated book are due to the author and how many to the translator. But frankly I found the book boring. We hear a huge amount about what the characters think and feel, especially in the first half of the book, but they don't actually do much. The school is so unlike any British school (right down to using US terminology for age groups) that I wonder why the book is set in London. Grandmama's interesting creatures are introduced, then play little part until the last part of the story. Oksa herself wallows in self pity and lacks charm, other characters are clearly labelled Best Friend, Potential Love Interest, Creepy Villain, etc and proceed to perform accordingly with little development, and I finally got to the end with a sense of relief and no interest in discovering what happens next.

Margaret Mahy did it much better - and much more succinctly - in The Changeover.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hugely disappointing 7 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
the story could have been so good but totally ruined by the stilted writing and poor character definition. Perhaps some of the blame for the poor vocabulary could fall to the translation!!!!? Will not be reading any follow-ups.

4.0 out of 5 stars A worthy successor to Mr Potter 13 Jun 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
First the bad news: The early chapters are really so much like Harry Potter that it's irritating; Oksa has a teacher like Snape, creatures like Dobbie, even a selection procedure that cries out for a Sorting Hat. But ...

The Good news is that once you've got past all that, the story takes off in other directions, and takes you along for a roller coaster ride. Lots of interesting characters, some amusing and clever subplots, and it'll make a great movie!

Thoroughly recommended for younger readers - and us adults who still like a good old fashioned fantasy, well told. I look forward to more translations!

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible writing 27 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read a lot of YA/teenage fiction and this was dire. The writing is terrible - packed with cliches, overuse of adjectives and descriptive phrases, crammed with information which is introduced in a contrived way, unrealistic dialogue, particularly among the child characters. Not sure how much of this is down to translation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 12 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The writers of this book whilst not possessing the talent of Jk Rowling have written an enjoyable book. I am 50 plus and am looking forward to the next one . Not just for the kids.

2.0 out of 5 stars disapointing
This is very lightweight and less than engrossing, neither of my grand daughter managed to finish it and they are big readers. A disappointment to say the least.
