Generally this book is "The beginners guide" to Goju Ryu. It starts off with a little history about: Karates's mission and aim; History of Okinawan Karate-Do; The development of modern Karate-Do; The origin of Goju Ryu; Master Kanryu Higashionna; Master Chojun Miyagi; and from there, it really goes striaght into Basics, Kata and Kumite. The black and white pictures are very detailed and easy to follow, as they show you the break down of every basic(beginner) technique in Goju Ryu Karate. It starts with things like, how to make a fist, how to make a stances, how to move how to bow, how to follow the pictures, as some dawn elements are put under the pictures to explain movement of certain techniques, etc.
From there it takes you through basic punces, stances, strikes, with the same helpful images, then it move onto a kata, again with the same kind of images as well as movement of the feet diagrams below and explains of the bunkai(application) of each move.
Next are Kumite sets which are explain on the matter of how to do them, but you really need to know the basic techniques in order to do these correctly as less help is given. Then there is a little more Kata to finish that section off.
The last section is called "SANCHIN" which means 3-battles, and sanchin training is essential for the understanding Goju Ryu Karate. This section again has very clear pictures, and explainations but no Bunkai. This is because the Sanchin Kata is not a kata as such, but it is. Its a training kata used to understand Goju Ryu Karate, so applications of the techniques are vast.

Overall this is a very detail book which is easy to learn from, however, like I mensioned before, it really is a beginner's book. Advanced students wouldn't get nearly as much out of it as a beginner would as they can learn more from it. Having said that, it would be a very good refernce guide for any higher grade to clean up or polish their techniques as it does go into a lot of detail, but to be honest, a higher grade would know all of the material in this book.
I bought this book as I'm currently a Shotokan practitioner and want to look into Goju Ryu as another style to learn. But even though I'm from a Japanese style, not Okinawan, I noticed that I already know all of the basics that are in this book. So it I understood the book stright away, but the book is very easy to understand anyway. But it didn't really give me what I needed, as it wasn't really advanced enough and I had already learnt everything in this book from other sources, so if you are in the same position as me, I would not recommend this book. But I do promise that it would be of GREAT help to any body currently learning Goju Ryu Karate.

Good for reference 15 Dec 2010

Good reference guide if you need to perfect your techniques. One thing books can't do for you that videos or demonstrations can do is show you the movement phase. Yes one picture shows a stance, the next picture shows another stance... But getting between the two correctly is hard to show in pictures.

I'd definatly reccomend picking it up to throw in your bag with all your gear. It's great for beginners too.

I've just started Goju-Ryu and I wanted a book to assist in learning the first katas as I wasn't progressing as fast as I wanted to.
The book does have basic information - punches, kicks etc are explained.
The problem I have is that the kata movements in the book are different to the ones we are currently being taught - and the bits I was struggling with are different.
If you want a book to show you some kata that may be different to the one you are currently learning - book was first written a while ago - then this may be the best way for you to spend your money.
A better way might be to spend the money on a one-on-one session with your sensei or search through you-tube.
