"Oil Painting For the Serious Beginner" is not for beginners only, as the title might imply. The text is rich with thoughtful instruction, anectdotal stories and just plain good advice. Whatever painting level you find yourself at, there is enough practical guidance and insightful discussion on the art of making a painting "work" to keep you challenged. Author/painter Steve Allrich is clearly in love with the process of oil painting, and his passion for this subtle art is infectious. Be inspired, be heartened, be provoked. I was, and continue to be!

Whether you consider yourself a serious beginner, or quite an accomplished painter, there is much to be gleaned from this marvelous volume. Steve Allrich is a smashing painter, with a no nonsense approach to his writing...a bit reminiscent of David Curtis and Trevor Chamberlain. If you are a fan of these artists, you are certain to appreciate this American plein-air painter. His work is fresh, the writing insightful, and the multiple color illustrations throughout the book are truly inspiring. A welcome change of scenery in the landscape of art instruction. Highly recommended.

This book has a serious printing fault.Almost all of the illustrations are orange,for instance orange bananas, orange snow, and orange sky.This shows very poor
