To a lot of people, art has always been something that completely escapes them, not that they don't have an interest but the question of where to begin feels to big a piece for them to tackle. Looking at it in the perspective of a mountain that has to be moved rather than looking for the first rock and going from there.
What Mark and Mary do in this title is break it all down into manageable chunks so that the reader has a chance to get started and begin to get their own footing into the world of oil painting. This title covers everything from gathering your materials (which includes help setting you up with paints alongside brushes and easel etc.) through to some basic art principles so that you can break your subject down and make a start. Add practical techniques and then step by step guides to some paintings and you can see how it all begins to work and gather a useful set of skills to begin learning on your own. Finally add a comprehensive DVD to help and its pretty much an ideal tutor.
All in, I found this a great book, it was informative, the subject matter was easily broken down and comprehensive to understand and I've gained a few new skills (alongside some paint stains on clothing) to begin my own exploration. It's a great way to get started and if I'm honest will open the way so that many people can start to create their own artwork which will make ideal presents for friends and family.

I am very impressed with this book - very approachable and interesting. I only got it yesterday and it already helped me to paint a couple of landscapes. I am a complete beginner and was very impressed by how easy it can be to paint.

Three years ago I reviewed Mark and Mary Willenbrink's "Drawing for the Absolute Beginner" and was highly enthusiastic in my praise. The book was true to its title, more so than the majority of introductory drawing books out there, and gave me a wonderful introduction to the complex world of visual art.
In May of last year, the Willenbrink's 2nd volume - "Watercolor for the Absolute Beginner" - was reissued by North Light Books. And now comes the 3rd and possibly best installment in the series - "Oil Painting for the Absolute Beginner".
Being a beginner at anything is often uncomfortable, confusing and frustrating, and art is certainly no exception. I once attended a "beginner's" art class and was almost immediately subjected to lengthy discussions about intensity, composition, symmetry, negative space and a dozen other terms I had never heard before. When it came time to put brush to canvas, the things I really needed to know seemed so basic that I was too embarrassed to ask...How much paint should I use? Do I start with a pencil sketch? How should I hold the brush? How high should I set my easel? How do I use all these tools and materials? Etc. Because of the instructor's assumptions and my lack of a proper foundation, the class was, for me, discouraging and largely unproductive.
And this is what makes the "Absolute Beginner" series so wonderful. The authors, while clearly very serious and very talented artists, are completely aware of what it means to be a beginner. They understand the importance of those first baby steps in getting their students on the correct path, while not confusing them with concepts they may not yet be ready for. As such, the layout of this book is an example of perfect simplicity. Chapter one presents a fine overview of oil painting materials; chapter two looks at basic art principles, each one clearly explained in terms any student can comprehend; chapter three takes the student through the basic techniques of oil painting - paint mixing, brushstrokes, applying and lifting paint, cleaning brushes, and more; and finally, chapter four guides the student through more than fifteen painting exercises, covering still lifes, landscapes, figures and portraits. As with their two previous books, the Willenbrinks have succeeded magnificently in their presentation.
Since pencils and watercolors are easier to work with than oils, you would do yourself a huge favor by picking up the drawing and watercolor volumes of the "Absolute Beginner" series and working through those books before proceeding to this wonderful volume. You will be well on your way to great success in the incredible world of art.

Good but the Kindle version is not worth it..

Good but the Kindle version is not worth it due to it is gray-scale. Other than that I would have given the book itself 5 stars for sure.

Oil Painting for the Absolute Beginner provides a fine step-by-step guide to oil painting, is accompanied by a DVD workshop of demonstrations, and provides twelve painting projects progressing from easy landscapes to still life and animals. From selecting brushes to the basics of color, this presumes no prior knowledge and is a 'must' for any bare-bones beginner.
