Product Description

Review

"Bruce Burdette, Former Director of Maintenance Pan Am; Instructor Aviation High School for 10 years, "Explanation of contaminates in the system and resulting damage of hydraulic system components is presented in filters and filtration. The point of how a filtration engineer would design the location of an applicable filter or filters in a hydraulic system is well made. Hydraulic pumps were described in detail with good accompanying illustrations. Selection of pump types, by an engineer, based on efficiencies, flow rate and power, pressure, and displacement are well defined. The principle of flow control is well presented supported by mathematics and diagrams with a good description of check valves, pressure relief valves, and sequence valves.

Product Description

A hydraulic system transmits force from one point to another using an incompressible fluid. The fluid is almost always oil and the force is almost always multiplied in the process. Nowadays, it is very easy to add force multiplication (or division) to the system.

Hydraulic systems are extensively used in machine tools, material devices, transport and other mobile equipment. Written for design engineers and maintenance personnel Oil Hydraulic Systems: Principles and Maintenanceprovides the necessary tools for installation, operation and maintenance of hydraulic equipment. The book touches on such subjects as: hydraulic system maintenance, repair and reconditioning, seals and packing, hydraulic pipes, hoses and fitting, design of hydraulic circuits.

Full of promise, but ... 5 July 2011

This would be a great book, if only it wasn't so fraught with errors. For example, p15 shows equation for 'mechanical lever' to actually reduce the output force from a given input force - this force would actually be increased greatly over the input force. While the text otherwise indicates this correctly, the transposing of smaller diameter symbol with larger diameter changes the meaning.

Unfortunately, there are too many more errors in the book to mention here, as space doesn't allow. A frustrating read, not reliable for an everyday reference. Hopefully an errata, or 'mea culpa' new edition will come out soon. Not worth the price of admission currently - don't buy this one!

This book is pretty good, but could use a little more detail in some areas.
