2.0 out of 5 stars Great if you understand the terminology! 11 Aug. 2013
By juckky
Format:Paperback
I purchased this book in the hope that it would explain the various parts of the rig ..., but whilst it seems to have plenty of detail there isn't a single image so it's a pretty useless book in my eyes. I don't know whether the printed book contains images, but the kindle version does not.

Only buy if you fully understand all of the terminology

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book 18 Feb. 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Used this book to get myself a job in the oil industry.

It was very apparent during my first few weeks that this book had put me at a great advantage and I had a much better understanding of the industry and drilling process than other new starters.

It is focused on american land rigs but most of the oil industry is american-centric so this is not such a bad thing.

Format allows you to dip in and out of chapters as you chose. Explanations are clear and easy to understand whilst still delivering the technical aspects.

Glossary of terms is very useful.

If you want a clear and simple guide to OIL DRILLING then this is your book. A lot of other books focus too much on political/economical/social aspects of the oil industry. This however, is exactly what it says on the cover... "A Roughnecks guide to the universe"... and if you don't know what a roughneck is yet, you probably need this book! : )

A very well written book suitable for all levels of experience. It goes well on anyone's bookshelf.
For me it is cogently presented and complex procedures well explained.
