Product Description

CD Description

· Oil & Gold, the third full-length Shriekback album, is widely considered the band's best. Released in 1985 on Island Records in the States and on Arista in the UK and Europe, "Oil And Gold" saw the band metamorphose from contemplative to rocking. The addition of Martyn Barker on drums and Lu Edmonds (Ex Damned) on guitar gives many of the songs an almost punk rock feeling.

· "Oil And Gold" is the bridge between the old trio of Barry Andrews, Carl Marsh, and Dave Allen, and the new vehicle for Andrews alone. Longtime singer Marsh left the band halfway through the recording, leaving Andrews to take over the vocals, the album's highlights, including the three opening songs, sung by Marsh, and the hit, `Nemesis', became the band's signature sound.

· This enhanced edition comes with a newly re-mastered bonus disc for B-Sides - some never before released on CD - as well as a enhanced booklet with new notes

Avoid the recent double CD from Shriekback. If you are looking for their best work, then opt for the marvellous Oil and Gold album instead.

Particularly recommended to fans of Michael Mann's film 'Manhunter', as the CD contain two tracks which Mann used in the movie. - 'Coelcanth' and 'The Big Hush'. Also, listen out for the great 'Faded Flowers' which Mann used in the film he produced call 'Band of the Hand'. Overall: Don't miss this classic album!

Some aspects of Shriekback's classic 'Oil and Gold' you might dismiss as 80s excess: the overcooked lyrics ('Big black nemesis / Parthenogenesis ...' from 'Nemesis'), the slap bass, the sweeping, lush synths, the hyper-soul backing vocals -- the whole creation obviously high on something or other.
But there's a huge amount of pure pleasure to be had from this. The upbeat tracks are brilliantly manic. There's obvious Talking Heads ('Remain in Light'-period) influence in the overlaying of vocal tracks (e.g. 'Hammerheads'), the combining of tom-toms with syndrums, and the wailing, soaring guitars à la Adrian Belew. The slow numbers are ethereally beautiful. (Listen out for synths by Hans Zimmer, now famous for his film scores e.g. 'Gladiator'.) Production is excellent: there's a sense of dark, sinister space around the music. But what really keeps me coming back to this CD is the melodic invention: it's just a great series of brilliantly executed tunes. And even the lyrics can be apt and true in their own crazed way:
We get it right sometimes
We shine a light sometimes
We see the fish below the ice sometimes.
(from 'Fish below the Ice')

This album is clearly a 5-star offering by Shriekback in their heyday. OK Carl Marsh left halfway through, but Barry picked up the vocals for the rest of the album and as a whole this is the Shrieks at their best. Quirky lyrics, less reliance on synth programmed drums than previous 2 albums (thanks to Martyn) and some really punchy guitar work. As with all albums there is a wee bit of filler, but overall this is a class collection. Originally released on CD in US, it was time to let my old vinyl copy retire and get this supposedly deluxe double CD set from Cherry/Lemon.

So is this reissue of a suitable quality? Well, yes and no! The first disc is the standard album, and sounds perfectly ok. The release is not digitally remastered - only the word 'mastered' is used - so it may in fact be a slight re-eq of the old CD. However that's not a bad thing as it is well textured and not ear-splittingly loud like some new re-releases of 80s classics.

I had quite a few of the 12" from this time, including the promo only Dance Mix of "Fish Below", which is not a patch on the commercial 12" mix, but is still a welcome inclusion on the bonus CD here. Cherry have decided to take all tracks from the 12" Nemesis double pack, the Arch-Deviant remix (but not the 7" version), and the second 'bonus' 12" of unrelated early material from "Fish Below" double. Therein lies a problem, this bonus was arguably a sly attempt to boost sales, so really doesn't fit here comfortably, and to make matters worse "All Lined Up" is from crackly vinyl source! The rest of this disc does indeed sound cleaned/mastered, so the crackly fade-in and odd light pop is really noticeable on this track. The good news is the 12" mixes and the live tracks all sound pristine, if a little less punchy than usual (Arch Deviant and Plancton Enriched mixes have ofcourse appeared on a number of compilations before).

I personally would have preferred the 7" of "Nemesis" and also "Malaria" (appeared on The Dancing Years import) to the really early bonus 12" stuff, although the live tracks are really cool...or maybe all of them, as CD2 is only 55 mins long!

Last little quibble is the booklet - they have scanned the cover of Nemesis 12" (fine) and the inner of the album, so the lyrics are totally unreadable. It just seems such a waste of two sides of paper, and the notes are a little flowery too (not from Barry or Carl, which would've been far more interesting to fans).

This is still a good reissue, and essential for Shriek fans, but presentation does let it down quite a bit, as does the slightly odd track-listing on the bonus CD - but get it nonetheless!
