Product Description

Product Description

Originally a West End stage production (opening in 1963) and later a successful film (in 1969), Oh What A Lovely War was inspired by the book The Donkeys. A smash hit when it opened, it brought back into favour many of the songs of the First World War era, songs that have continued to be popular music hall songs long after the war. With the show slated to return to the theatre where it was first staged (the Theatre Royal Stratford East) before transferring to the West End, and with the impending centenary of the First World war, these songs are sure to enjoy yet another revival of interest.

1.0 out of 5 stars Truth gone AWOL 28 Nov 2013
Absolutely nothing to do with 'Oh What A Lovely War.' Cynical marketing in the soon to be centenery. Its First World War link is its use of propaganda tactics to sell what might have been an interesting collection if sold as the collection of ancient tracks it is. The cover photo is not of British Soldiers. Shame on those trying to make money so disrespectfully. I advise anyone to buy the soundtrack of the film or the Joan Littlewood production.

1.0 out of 5 stars The whole thing is a "mislead" 12 Jan 2014

This is a cobbled together set of "old" recordings and has nothing to do with the Film of the same name OR of the stage musical on the same name under the direction of Joan Littlewood ~ don't buy it !!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what its description on Amazon said. 20 Aug 2013

This is not the "original soundtrack" of Oh what a lovely War- it is some of the songs on which the songs in the show were based sung a long time ago with pre-electric recordings. Even the photograph on the CD cover is misleading. Those are American soldiers not British Tommies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wasn't quite what I hoped for 13 Feb 2014

because the stage show is so different from the film script. But a useful reference for the songs for those too young to remember them..

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what it claims to be 5 May 2014
By William W. Stowe - Published on Amazon.com

This is NOT the "original soundtrack" of the Joan Littlewood classic, but a collection of original scratchy recordings of WWI-era songs, some of which show up in the play.
