5.0 out of 5 stars Some Classic Comedy 25 Nov 2004
By A Customer
This, somewhat forgotten-about classic comedy, has finally made it onto the DVD market. The second i saw this DVD advertised, i went straight onto Amazon to purchase it. I was delighted to see it after maybe 8 or 10 years. Since a member of my family recorded over my cassettes, i thought it was lost forever.
Its nice to get some comedy show where no one swears, and everything is, well, 'rosy!'
The story is set on a quiet branch line railway, in the fictional village of Hatley. The sitcom follows the various staff members of the station running the station in their own way. The new station master arrives only to discover an old flame from his past, and its not long before its re-lit! A great comedy with some original gags and is sure to have you giggling right through. Each character is very colourful, as is the surroundings! The cast members include Paul Shane and Su Pollard, best known for their roles in the earlier 'Hi-De-Hi', another favourite of mine.
I recommend this to fans of Hi-De-Hi and You Rang Me Lord.
Cant wait to see the next DVD with the latter series.

5.0 out of 5 stars gentle funny comedy 18 Sep 2004
By swilson
The best from the writers of Hi De Hi, You Rang etc. So happy to see this at last on DVD as my copies from tv are wearing out as I have watched it so many times. Especially funny is the wacky Su Pollard as Ethel. Easy comedy, funny and can't wait for series 2 to come out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gentle comedy at its best 15 Nov 2005
Like other reviewers, the release of the DVD of the first series was the first opportunity I'd had to revisit this classic and oft-forgotten comedy from the pen of David Croft and collaborators. The acting is provided by the informal repetory company of Croft and Perry, perhaps best-known for their forays into holiday camp life courtesy of Hi-De-Hi. Su Pollard, in particular, offers a performance filled with the gusto we've come to expect from this national treasure. The setting is country railway sation at the end of its time on the railway network map, and the series follows the trials and tribulations of its merry band of old retainers. I'm sad to say that I could never now envisage the BBC commissioning another series that bore any resemblance to these slow-burning, gentle and amusing half-hours. Times change, and this DVD offers a look back at the end of the era of true situational comedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh Dr Beeching - Complete Series one 11 Dec 2004
By Koozar
I to have been waiting for this classic comedy to come out on DVD. The only time I have seen these episodes was when they were shown on television in about 1996. I only managed to record about 4 episodes of the second series and I have eagerly been waiting for them to come out on DVD or VHS. I have not as yet recived this item but I know that it is a brilliant comedy starring Su Pollard acting the part of the lady in the booking office of Hatley station who molecoddles her son Wilfred, a porter at the station. This programme also stars Pual Shane and Jeffery Holland who play ex-army man and porter Jack Skinner who is very protective over his wife and daughter. Jeffery Holland plays the part of the new station master Cecil Parkin who discovers that Jack Skinners wife ,May, was his lover during the war. This is a classic comedy with plenty of great jokes and brilliant acting. This is written by David Croft who wrote my other favourite BBC classic comedies, Dads Army and Allo' Allo. This is a must buy comedy for all. Its a great pity there were only 2 Series and 20 Episode.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Watch 28 Sep 2005
By Lew1
Format:VHS Tape
Oh Dr Beeching is my favourite gentle British Sitcom. The laughs here are plentiful, but don't expect anything particularly original or inspiring. It's just some funny actors sharing some humerous lines around the glorius backdrop of an Railway Station in the 60's.
The setting is quite delicious, with lots of lovely shots of the steam trains and the station's surroundings - and the attention to detail is marvellous. This could really be in the 60s.
Sue Pollard is a joy to watch, along with Paul Shane doing what he does best. Some of the other characters are a little boring though, and really serve as straight men for the others to reel off some more humerous gags.
Probably the main criticism is that the first series can be pretty repetetive... There are many ongoing plot lines that don't so much develop as just, well, keep reocurring.
Still, it's lovely gentle comedy that is a joy to watch and if you enjoy the likes of "As Time Goes By" or "Last of the Summer Wine", this should be to your liking as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun 1 Dec 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
A pleasure to enjoy again especially as it covers the day to day of a branch-line railway showing the dedication and humour of all the staff long before privatisation and HS2 came along to spoil things.
