"The album, in part, celebrates the ghosts of the smoke age, and the various ways they were wrecked but still sailed on. That's the way it is with humans. You could call it ... 5.0 out of 5 stars The Best! 20 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I'm a fan, and I like a lot of Robyn Hitchcock's work, but I Often Dream of Trains stands out as exceptional. It is one of my all time very favorite records..... There's hardly anything on here that's less than great, and lots of it will have your hairs standing up on end, blissed by its ethereal gorgeousness. It's one of those things I obsessively play for a while, then put away, then rediscover again a year or so down the road...I never permanently grow tired of this record, and I am always happy to rediscover it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars first heard at a train station 29 Aug 2003
By "pgr42"
Format:Audio CD
The first time I heard the title track to this album was back in the early 90's when Robyn rang a friend of a friend and gave us two hours notice of a "gig" on Brockenhurst Station.

Having raced down, and much to the puzzlement of a number of British Rail workers, Robyn and the Egyptians (and a.n.other guitarist who's name I can't remember) launched into "I Often Dream of Trains". (Followed by a whole raft of tenuously train-related songs.)

Years later I came across the CD and bought it. And liked it, a lot. Last night I played it again for the first time in a few years. And liked it a lot, all over again. Admittedly my view might be coloured by flashbacks to the sunset over the English countryside from the station platform as Robyn played the haunting title melody, describing a journey almost certainly taken along, and past, that station. That is just the wonderfully evocative type of music that Robyn plays.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime 18 April 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
If you've never chanced across Robyn Hitchcock before, then its about time you did. If you're the sort of person that listens to a particular album because only that album will do at that time, you'll like this. You won't know why that album has to be listened to again, you just know that only this album will do. Melancholics, Surrealists and Dreamers take note.
