4.0 out of 5 stars Great Idea but Possibly too Late. 25 Mar. 2014
By Bruce TOP 500 REVIEWER
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
It might seem strange to have a rechargeable battery for an item that already contains a rechargeable battery itself - but over the last few years I can't say how many times I wish I had had this item! There have been many occasions when at a crucial part of a game, where many hours of play had built up to this point - only to be confronted with the message that the controller was running out of charge.

The thing is that the lead to the controller from the PS3 is too short to be used in play and you can't charge while the PS3 is turned off - so the temptation for most people, (especially those who fit in gaming around other life events) is to just pick up the controller and play, without thinking about charging, with the inevitable result.

What this device means is that you can play a game at the same time as charging the power bank - so that when your controller runs out - you can fit the power bank and carry on, without having to stop in the middle of a game. It fits very neatly and is quite light, so you don't notice it when in place - it looks exactly like the material and branding of the PS3 controller, so doesn't distract your eye, either.

All in all, this is a great product for the lazy gamer, who wants to spend all their time playing - not waiting for your controller to charge. The only thing is - where has this been all the years when I really needed it? Now we have the PS4 and the PS3 is presumably at the end of its life, so I'm not sure how timely this is and hence how useful it can be? But I will certainly use it over the next few months and be glad of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone, but still a decent product 18 Feb. 2014
By MyKeyReviews TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
When it comes to console controllers, if you were to mention "power pack" to anyone, most would presume you'd be on about an Xbox controller, that's because it isn't rechargeable by default, whereas the PS3's official controller is already rechargeable... So there's no point in getting this product, right? Well not exactly.

This product clearly isn't going to be for everyone, after all the PS3 controller is already rechargeable and you can just plug it in whilst playing (if the cable is long enough), or you may already have a decent charging docking station.

But if you don't have either one of the above or are someone who hates cables, then this may be something that would of use to you.

It's pretty simple to use, just plug the included mini-USB into the power bank and the other end into an appropriate USB power source such as the PS3 and wait for it to charge, you can tell when it's charged as the LED light turns from red to blue.

Once charged, clip the power banks extendible arm onto the underside of the controller and slot in the micro-USB, from here it will automatically start charging up the controller.

As for comfort, if you normally use both middle & index fingers for the trigger buttons, then you wont notice anything different apart from the controller having a little extra weight to it. But if you're like me who only uses their index fingers on the triggers & has their middle fingers resting on the back. then you will notice the power bank gets in the way ever so slightly, but it's one of those things you forget about once you get used to it.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good idea... But... 15 May 2014
By Kirsty VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
A love the idea of the spare battery pack, because there's nothing more annoying that being in the middle of a boss level when your controller dies. Then you spend the next hour right in front of the TV, so you can continue playing while the controller charges.

This charges up with the same wire and port that you use to charge the controller, so I could just slot it into the controller when needed. This was great and obviously meant I could get a few more hours gameplay with sitting right on top of the console, but there are a few small issues with it...

1) Its awkward and fiddley to attach it to the controller. Its difficult to fit insert the charger into the port at the back, while fitting the springy "claw" between the the the thumb sticks on the front.

2) It makes the controller substantially heavier that it is alone. It did make my wrists ache after a little while, and it does make it a bit more awkward to use the L1/L2, R1/R2 buttons.

3) The light on my battery pack is very temperamental. Sometimes it lights up, other times nothing to suggest its charging/ full at all.

A great idea, but not executed exactly right. :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful little extra! 15 May 2014
By Lewis Hiley VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I think anyone who has ever played a game on a PS3 has at some point experienced the annoying problem of the harrowing message that is displayed when the controller is approaching death while the game is just getting interesting. Whats more, with the PS3's embarrassingly short cable making playing an impossibility if you have a wall hanging TV, the system needs to be also kept on while charging! Oh dear then! This is precisely why one of these is needed!

Keep playing for hours and hours on end, it perfectly erodes the problems addressed in the opening paragraph. There are a few downsides however! The build quality is pretty awful, compared with the PS3 controller it feels like a piece of added on plastic (which I suppose it is really). Yet besides from this it really is a solid product. Perhaps its worse enemy then is that there is now something called a PS4 out... and these problems are addressed with that update.
