This book is for qualified drivers who want to help a learner to practise in between lessons from a driving instructor.
It is divided into four distinct sections.
Part one covers the essentials of being an accompanying driver (you). Topics include where you fit in, what to expect, your personal qualities (what to do and what to avoid), the practice vehicle and planning the practice sessions.
Part two covers the logbook topics. The official syllabus for learning to drive is split into a series of distinct topics and the book follows that list. Each topic is on a separate page and the same format is used throughout.
Firstly, there is an introduction to the topic. You are then told how you can help your learner and what to expect your learner to do, as a novice driver. Where appropriate, there is also an alert, warning you of potential problems and what you can do.
Part three of the book is a section on further information, for example about ADIs and a list of addresses. I found this section of the book of no use.
Part four is a copy of the logbook, where you and the ADI can record the learner's progress. Your learner may already have been issued with a separate logbook.
The book is written in a very clear and simple style. Don't be fooled by how small and thin the book is; everything is there in a compact format. The size is a very handy A5. Finding required information is very easy.
I have a couple of warnings about this book, that may influence your decision on whether or not to buy it.
Firstly, it is not a driving instruction manual. It does not teach how to perform the different manoeuvres; other books and professional instructors exist for that purpose.
Secondly, this book is a complement to professional tuition, not a substitute for it. Your learner needs to be taking lessons; your role is to provide the reinforcement in between those lessons, following the instructor's teaching, not your own way of driving.
If you are keen to help a learner become a safe and competent driver (and for you not to be a hindrance in the learning process), this book is an extremely useful one to have access to. A combination of professional tuition and private practice (supported by this book) will give your learner some important vital experience.
