very good printer,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: HP Officejet 6500 Wireless Multifunction All-in-One Printer, Copier, Scanner and Fax (Electronics)
This printer was very easy to set up and was connected wirelessly to both of my computers within an hour of it arriving. The only downside to it is the start up configuration when it is switched on each time. It takes a long time and is very noisy.Apart from that it is a good printer and is simple to operate.

A Good All-Rounder With Just A Few Minor Niggles,
By
This review is from: HP Officejet 6500 Wireless Multifunction All-in-One Printer, Copier, Scanner and Fax (Electronics)
This printer is a solid all-rounder that does it all. It includes features such as automatic duplex (printing on both sides of a page), that you might associate with more expensive machines. The quality of text print is not at all bad, and is, I would imagine, entirely acceptable for just about anyone. The colour output is reasonable, but just a little washed out perhaps. Certainly for my needs it's fine though, and most users are unlikely to take issue with it for casual or normal run of the mill colour and even light photo output. The wireless features and the fax all work, though as with much of this technology, it can be more of a hassle than it should be setting up. That though, is a general complaint, and not something that's fair to lay at HP's door. The bottom line so to speak, is that it does all work. The instructions that come with it are in my opinion better than most. Likewise the scanner and copying function won't let you down, though it would have been nice if HP had bundled a little more in the way of software for the scanner. Still, it does work well, and what is included will get you started. This model has attracted some comment because of its noise levels. Whilst this is fair in that it does make a bit of a racket starting up, and then occasional other noises thereafter, this has I feel been slightly exaggerated. I'd agree that if you really need a whisper quiet machine, the 6500 probably isn't for you. Otherwise though, I wouldn't let these reports put you off. If you buy the maximum capacity ink cartidge in black, then the 6500 has reasonable printing costs, relatively speaking. (Don't get me started on ink prices!) It's not an out and out speed machine, though it is fast in economy mode, again though, I found it to be easily fast enough right across the board in terms of printing. The scanning process is quite slow however, although the results are fine. I'm afraid I do have to take the scanner, or at least the scanner software to task on another point however. There are only two buttons for the operation of the scanner, no problem there you might think, should keep things nice and simple? Well, it should. Sadly HP drop the ball here, with just too many messages referring you to the documentation. A common one is 'no scan options' when you press the scan button. Why can't HP simply do as other manufacturers have done, and have the machine if in doubt automatically revert to the most common bog-standard setting, rather than annoy and slow-down their users in this way? To make matters worse, HP's support for this type of problem from their website, in my opinion leaves a bit to be desired. I stand by the 6500 as a good product, but the software though doing the job, and getting you there, really has to be addressed and brought up to the standard of the rest of the product in terms of user experience. I now turn to the software more generally. HP's software has taken a few knocks recently. The core software that comes with the HP 6500 is okay. It's nothing fancy, in fact it's pretty basic. That's not a problem though since it does what it is supposed to. However, HP have in their wisdom included in their software CD, an automatic link to their online shop. My advice is at the installation stage, to exclude this so that it isn't loaded. My pc was crashing and slowing down after installation, and I eventually traced it to this. I can't understand why HP after taking knocks for the quality of their software, would want to do this. It's a pity because it has people feeling bad about a product that is actually good. Another common gripe with HP's software, and this is not specific to the 6500, is their 'Web-to-Share Upload Folder'. Some users don't like it, but HP have made it a real pain to remove. (This software does a range of fancy stuff, like letting you remotely access your 6500 wireless from anywhere and print stuff out). In fairness though, I haven't found this to be much of a problem in itself, and some users even give it the thumbs-up, considering it to be a useful addition. It's really just the principle of the thing. I certainly wouldn't suggest you let this put you off buying the 6500 wireless, though I would like to see HP ease off the control freakery a little in future. I would also like to see them iron out those little niggles in the core software, before venturing into more ambitious areas like this, which moves away from what I think most users expect from the software running their multifunction printer. The 6500 wireless isn't subtle being quite a big beast. But nor is it ugly, and I could see it slot into most small offices or home studies quite nicely. It offers good value for money, and is a well balanced machine doing it all, and for reasonable running costs, relatively speaking.

Very impressed so far!,

This review is from: HP Officejet 6500 Wireless Multifunction All-in-One Printer, Copier, Scanner and Fax (Electronics)
It was with a bit trepidation that I bought this printer. Some of the reviews I read were not great, my past experience of HP printers have not been great. However, I liked the look of the product, it has everything I want/need, and the price was more than tempting!I've only had it a couple of days, but I have to say I'm very impressed so far. It was extremely easy to set up - I set it up on a Windows 7 laptop, a Vista desktop and a Mac Powerbook G4. The only problems I had were with the Windows 7 machine and that due to Windows 7 software not being on the CD that came with the printer. However after a few minutes on google and the internet I managed to download the entire HP software for Windows 7 and installed it without issue. So far I've been impressed with the print quality and it's speed. It feels and looks sturdy and all the features seem to work perfectly (haven't used fax yet though!). I'd have no problems recommending it to anyone I know.
