I bought this all-in-one printer after my last HP printer for the past six years has finally gave up. I wanted to replace it with a quality printer that will serve me for another six years and decided to go for HP as I know they make quality printers. Yes, they do make cheap flimsy ones as well, so a little bit of research was required and finally I decided to go for this one. I'm glad I did as this printer obviously one of their better ones. It is sturdy (and heavy) and there's nothing flimsy about it. Printing quality is very good and fast. Scanning quality is excellent, the best I've seen from an all-in-one to date (even more expensive ones).

As for installation, the review is mixed. Installation on my Kubuntu machine couldn't have been easier. Having plugged the printer directly with a USB cable the printer was isntantly and seamlessly installed as if it was always there. Connecting to the printer through a network required me to install a new printer and then select it from the list of available printers (it was the only one there) and in less than a minute it was working. Setting up the scanner to save documents directly to the computer (digital filing, as HP call it) was also very quick and easy. I haven't tried using the fax yet but as the drivers were installed for me I have no reason to think it wouldn't work.

On Vista things were a bit more difficult. Although Vista saw the printer it had no drivers for it, nor did it find any on the internet (does it ever?) and it disliked the installation CD that came with the printer.
That required to download new drivers from the HP website (60mb) and then go through the lengthy installation process, but after about 40 mintues it was installed finally installed. I haven't set up the digital filing for Vista yet but unless Vista makes it difficult to share folders, it should be straight forward. Fax drivers were not installed, so don't have high hopes on it working.

I'm giving it five stars because I think it's a quality printer and despite the Vista experience as I feel it's not HP's fault. If you are a Linux who wants to make sure that this printer will have full functionality on Linux so this one is. If you are a Vista user, you might want to consider to upgrade to a better operating system first (e.g. Windows XP).

I bought this printer without adequate research as I have always had good experiences with HP printers.
I connected the L7680 to an HP laptop running Windows XP with Service Pack 3 using USB cable. There were several "hiccups" during installation and I had to downlad two patches from the HP web site before I could make progress.
After that, printing, copying, faxing and photo management were really excellent. Unfortunately I could not get scanning to work at all. I downloaded all the fixes but still no success, and HP help line simply blamed the incompatibility problem on Microsoft. When I try to scan i just get a "communication error" message and a suggestion that i download the fix that i have already installed. When I checked the HP Forums I see i am far from alone - this is a problem experienced by many, many people.
As I need scanning as a key function of my printer i have sent it back. This is very unfortunate as otherwise it met all my needs and now I do not know what to buy as an alternative. Any recommendations?

A very versatile machine, if only a little too big and heavy. I noticed that some reviewers were having issues whilst using Windows Vista. I did initially, but then I used HP's brilliant website and updated all the drivers and firmware and have had no issues or problems since. There is now an important update from HP which addresses the "Device is not connected" issue. And it does. In use, the machine does make a lot of noise and can rock your desk a bit. The supplied duplex unit is great. The ADF unit can jam, although this can be prevented by simply not overloading it. No need to buy expensive HP inks, there are good generic cartridges on the market which give just as good results. I have also managed to refill two of the colour cartridges and they have lasted well. The built-in fax can be used from your PC to send digital faxes via the 'phone line, but it is so much simpler just using it as normal. Not in the same league as a dedicated photo printer, so don't expect Epson R1800 quality prints. However, as an everyday home office machine, it excels. Just make sure that you download and install the latest drivers and software and that all important firmware to either resolve or prevent issues on Vista. I found it best to uninstall the machine and all related software, then load new software and follow on screen prompts to connect printer and allow everything to install. Yes, HP are aware of the problems with Vista, and HP being HP, have done a lot to resolve those issues. Don't rely on the embedded generic Windows drivers, because you will be disappointed.
Shop around for best prices, as this is not a cheap machine. It is, however, well built and seems to perform industrious duties much better than cheaper alternatives. One issue worth pointing out is that the built-in card reader can cause problems on Vista, even if you don't use it. If you do have an issue, simply "Safely remove mass storage device" and all will be good again. Not had this issue since latest firmware update. So if you have the patience to sort out any annoying issues, and yes, they can be, this machine will reward you with good quality scanning, printing and faxing. If you simply lack the expertise and patience, then look elsewhere for your all in one machine.
