Product Description

From the Back Cover

Exploit powerfully enhanced programmability in Office XP with authoritative information-straight from the Microsoft Office development team. This hardcore programming reference comes packed with practical, roll-up-your-sleeves resources to help you maximise your productivity with development tools for Microsoft Office, including the Microsoft Visual Basic(r) 6.0 and Microsoft Visual C++(r) development systems. This guide includes coverage of Workflow Solutions for Microsoft SQL Server(tm) and Microsoft Exchange, offering both design and coding examples, plus API-level coding examples. It also covers enhanced support in Microsoft Office XP for Web-enabled information sharing and XML. Use this incisive coverage to build on what you know and to accomplish everything from automating individual tasks to creating complex vertical-market applications. Each chapter presents dozens of code examples that illustrate the discussion. And the companion CD-ROM contains hundreds of procedures you can use right now--helping you to focus your creativity on designing solutions, rather than on building rudimentary code. It's everything you need to create better business solutions, faster!

You always get a chapter or two of idol history in your books. This book does not. Asuming previous knowledge of VBA, VB or VBS, the book takes you though 3 major stages,
1. How to perform every function in every office application - using VBA modules, keywords and references, instead of showing you where to click
2. Designing and implementing big web-services and interaction using no more than office and its built-in tools and add-ins, adn some careful thought
3. Sample code, demonstations and what OfficeXP can do for you and your company, its the perfect companion to those who are constantly asked to fiddle with Access Databases and Excel Invoices.
The book is roughly 750 pages of content and writen in a way thats easily understood. I havent finished the book, and to be honest its more of a super-advanced dictionary for those who are Office Developers, than a step by step walk-through to your first program.
ive really enjoyed the first few chapters, it gives you a whole new outlook on the applications and their programmability.
Definatly worth looking at.

Turgid Tome 9 Jun. 2001

This epic weighs in at around 770 pages, and it's pretty bad. With stunning insights such as: "If your COM add-in has a user interface, it must be integrated with the host application in some way, so the user can interact with it.", it's no wonder many trees had to die. Very, very poor editing job. I suspect a good technical editor could have gotten rid of 40% of the words in here and left only the information that I was hoping to find. Even then, much of the infromation is very superficial. I would recommend waiting for the third party books to appear.

I have been a programmer for over 30 years. Never before have I seen so many pages taken to convey so little useful information.
