Amazon.co.uk Review

The problem with a lot of books about Microsoft Office is that they let the software dictate their structure. This approach leads to books that are comprehensive in scope, but deathly boring to read. The authors of Office 2000 Answers! know that books are for people and have organised their material around the questions Office users have.

For instance, you may have encountered problems with Word "helpfully" converting paragraphs into list formats when you don't want a list at all. The authors provide a quick statement of this problem in question form--in plain English, so it's easy to recognise as the problem that has troubled you--and then provide two quick solutions. Among the questions and answers, they've sprinkled informational sidebars that help you decode jargon and learn about features you may not have seen.

When searching for a particular answer in this book, you may find it necessary to do some browsing--the Index doesn't always lead you to the relevant page immediately, unless you know the official Office terms for what you want to read about. Some readers may also find Office 2000 Answers! a bit text-heavy--more screen shots would be helpful in this book. --David Wall

Topics covered: Solutions for users of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook and FrontPage.

Not just answers, Ideas! 9 Nov 2000
By Geoffrey Brown - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've used Microsoft Office for a number of years -- it sticks in my memory that I started with Office 4.0 -- and generally tried to stay abreast of the new offerings in each subsequent edition of the software. I bought this book when I discovered that my clients were asking me questions that tended to cross the boundaries between the components of Office -- things like how to put a PowerPoint presentation on the web, using Outlook for mailing lists, how to integrate Access databases with the other components, etc.

I was pleased to find that this book gave me all of these answers plus many, many more that I have not been asked yet. Of course, one can always figure out the answers to questions like those by trial and error -- and a little luck -- but why waste the time?

I've read other Marty Matthews books, and knew that I could count on the book being clear and easy to understand -- and it definitely is. I read the book from the front to the back, and I didn't detect any weak places.

Another thing: for this kind of a book to be useful, a really good index is essential. Otherwise, you spend all your time thumbing through the text hoping you see something that looks like it might be sort of what you are looking for. Since I have seen some terrible indexing jobs in books recently, I tend to check the index as I read the book -- making sure that I would be able to find the section again from the index if I needed to. I'm happy to report that I did NOT feel the need to pencil in any extra index entries in this one. To me that means the index is complete, and targeted to the kind of use I would make of it.

For me, the nicest part of this book was that it gave me several ideas that I have already started using in my own use of MS Office. There really have been improvements in the Office product suite, and this book helped me recognize how some of them could be immediately useful to me. That's worth the price of the book all by itself!!
